How to Rig and Fish the Carolina Rig

New rigging systems like the drop shot and Neko rig are getting a ton of press in the bass fishing media while old-school classics like the Carolina rig receive much less. It's a classic for a reason though, and the Carolina rig needs to be in your arsenal for its flat-out fish catching ability in a variety of situations.

Professional bass angler John Crews shares how he rigs and fishes the Carolina rig. Equipment like the proper rod, reel and line are critical to the system's effectiveness as are selecting the right type of plastic lure. He advises on all these topics and more in this thorough walk-thru video.

Glad crews is starting to make some more tip videos. He's a hell of an angler.

I have been killing it recently on the Carolina Rig. Have caught them on 10.5" Zoom Ol' Monsters, full size Zoom Brush Hogs, 6" Zoom Lizards. Caught a 5lber Friday with a lizard. I just love this rig.

Lot of good information but at 2:00 min he says "as heavy a weight as possible, the heavier the better and the more fish your going to catch"... Pretty bold statement, I really would have liked to have heard 'His thoughts' on why! When it comes to the Carolina rig a couple of demo casts for various reasons would have been helpful too. Still a lot of good tips tho. Thanks guys

I have used a similar set up for saltwater fishing. I replace the cylinder weight for an egg sinker with a bead in between the sinker and knot. I use a j hook to slide the plastic onto. Typically I run it for fluke aka summer flounder here in NY. While I don’t get the same amount of fish as a buck tail jig bouncing on the bottom, I still get my share of bites with this system.

Dude that destroyer is a bad ass bait man. Black and blue is my favorite. I'm right on SML in Virginia not far from Johns shop. Way to go with that bait man

All kinds of variations on the CR setup. Ever use a bobber stopper between the swivel and your bead?

It's one of the last things I pull out but the ole ball and chain catches a lot of good bass.

I’m having a hard time fishing the bottom of a lake that is covered in a thick seaweed type grass and I wonder if this rig would work and keep me from reeling in 2 lbs of seaweed/slime on my bait. I’m also wondering if some type of float pegged at my bait with this rig would help

Why dont you use a Carolina keeper john? Seems like the best way to set up a carolina rig but i see a lot of the pros using swivels, i was shown with a carolina keeper years ago and just wondering what the benefits to a swivel are over a keeper

Would a medium rod fast tip be sufficient for this technique?
