Well I think this is the mystical understanding of other gospels too. I see J as both a teacher and a symbol for compassion who really is the way to God (i.e. mystical experience of love in our consciousness).
E.g. when Jesus heals the blind it's not literal but figurative. With compassion your eyes will open to things that were right in front of you but to which you were blind.
