The worst part about all of this was the overhype. I am in a group with a lot of the top shorts creators on this app and Youtube even holds meetings with us. I can confirm how much hype there was behind the scenes. The day shorts started all of that hype turned into "it takes time..."

YouTube is doing an amazing job by monetizing short form content in every country so fast. Instagram promised monetization years ago and still only have it in two countries. The TikTok fund started 3 years ago and still only 6 counties have it

It’s all about just gaining traction with the algo. My channnel gained 15k subs in the lasts 45 days but that big spike in subs came after consistently posting shorts for 6 months straight. As long as I’m consistently posting shorts, the views on my long form content continues to increase along the way. When I post a viral short, my long form content always gets a nice quick boost so there is some translation from shorts to longs

I've gone from $800-$1000 shorts bonus to $300 per month, big difference!

I have 0.02 rpm, and honestly it just feels a bit criminal that if you get millions of views you hardly get any income. And ofcourse the most important part of creating videos is that it’s fun. But getting some kind of income for it also results in creators sticking to the platform and continue to create awesome things. Do you think that the rpm will become a bit more normal like 10 cents or something?

YOU ARE PERFECTLY RIGHT ROB. With shorts your channel gets more exposure and more subscribers that will lead to hopefully more long form video views. So keep up the good work guys

Interesting to note the changes and we have to keep doing course correction all the time to stay up in this YouTube journey. Thank you for keeping us up to date with the ever-changing YouTube universe.

This was quite fascinating. I’ve seen a lot of channels grow over the past few months, taking advantage of the Shorts. I’m blow away at the creativity that has gone into some of these channels and the talent behind what they are creating.
I obviously don’t know what YouTubes thinking is in regards to this horrible revenue for Shorts. But I can’t see creators continue to plan and execute some of the incredible creativity in Shorts if there isn’t any revenue there for them. Time is money, people can’t continue to invest so much time into something that pays them so little.
I think that would be really unfortunate, I’ve enjoyed seeing how creative people have become with the Shorts.
Why would YouTube not want this type of creativity to stick around? It’s odd to say the least.

Shorts, as far as I'm concerned are only good for exposing your channel to a wider audience and helps get you more subs. Subs are what you need to build your channel to get more eyes on your long form videos. In other words, Shorts is just a good tool to build your subscriber count and that`s about it.

What this really tells us is that advertisers are not ready to throw their money behind Shorts yet. YouTube can't pay out ad revenue if they're not generating it. Just like different niches generate different CPMs, so too do Shorts. The interesting thing to watch is how much this changes over the course of the next year.

on shorts my rpm is 0.02 and on long form I have an rpm of 1.52, make the calculation of it, but hopefully it is just the beginning and currently I have never seen an ad on shorts whatsoever, I believe there are a verry small amounts of ads in there

Thank *god*, in this case vidIQ, for this video. FINALLY someone who's open about all of this and on top of that explained it so well. Feel like I was going crazy as YouTube kept being vague about my RPM in particular in chats, so it's good to know I'm not the only one with this Shorts-revenue situation.

Question is, will RPM be increased ''in the possible future'' for Shorts?

I'm a new content creator. Thank you for sharing this information. Right now my goal is to become partner/monetized, but mostly as a challenge for myself. However, in the back of my mind, making money is obviously a thought. I'm doing a mix of shorts and long-form videos. Because that 10million in 90 days looked insane to me. But I do enjoy making shorts so I still do, and it helps drive subscribers. Maybe one day they will adjust things to make more sense.

The more I learn about shorts. The more I think they are best for driving up subs and hence possibly driving traffic to long form content in the future

Actually I’m earning more with youtube shorts monetization so I’m good. My February income which was earned mostly from Shorts is almost x2 my January short bonus. Im not depending on regular video revenue anymore so I’m grateful for youtube shorts monetization. But I feel that it’s pretty unfair when it comes to stolen content aka content that creators dont actually create themselves.

We noticed a major fall in views right after the monetization program was launched too. Going to keep making the shorts though, making a gamble into the future.
