How to Identify Whether Your Child Needs Speech Therapy

In today’s My Opinion About…Series, I will review 4 signs that your child may need speech and language therapy or at the very least, to be evaluated by a speech therapist.

Now, if you consider that the scope of speech therapists is pretty wide, your child may require speech and language therapy if they’re having;

– Speech difficulties

– Language difficulties

– Reading difficulties

– Fluency disorders

– Auditory processing difficulties

– Swallowing; or

– Voice disorders

And these difficulties may appear at any time during their development- from birth, they could be developmental or acquired.

If you would like to expand your child’s language skills, from home, using proven speech therapy techniques, while having fun, please check out our online course for parents: Late-Talker's Bootcamp course.

Just wondering these words you talk about, is it repetition or new words. now we never suffered what you have just stated but at 3.0 years we could not utter any word till i took him to playgroup!!! what was our problem?

Learnt from you 200 - 300 words.
This means words that a stranger can understand

Very informative. Thank you. I’ll pass this along to someone who definitely needs this type of therapy. By 3 years old children shouldn’t be struggling to speak.

I brought the speech delay up to 3 pediatricians and my request for therapy was denied. I’m a nurse who works at a peds hospital so it was particularly frustrating to be told “he’s a boy, they talk late, trying to teach him other languages early was a mistake too…” and “trust me I have a family full of people who needed SLT and your son doesn’t”…here we are at 4 yrs old finally getting evaluated by the school district since I can’t understand everything he says (nor can others) and he is in his 4th school after being kicked out of 3 others for aggressive behavior and not listening. 😫 this has been the most stressful 4 yrs. His 1 min APGAR was 1 then 5 min was 7. Failed induction at 42/2 wks then emergency C-section (after I told them no induction, just do the surgery)… thank you for your video

These are salient points, thank you. Sure, the worrying part by the parents should never be taken for granted.

My baby is almost 2 & she literally converses in sentences, but I can't comprehend alot of it. I hate it cause her dad can - or atleast he acts like he can.. I don'treally think he does though 😅 there's no way he can. But anyway she says I love you, what you doin & when you ask her, she says nothin or expresses what shes doing.. she knows to tell me when she needs to changed, & when shes hungry, etc. she can count to 10.. she knows her abc's. she sings. she says when shes ready to go nightnight. And plays, but she plays by herself alot. her siblings are away at the moment. She's attended a daycare very briefly cause we moved. wondering how do either teach her to talk more clear or help w understanding her better.

Does that mean that if we are still struggling with communication at 7 years we cannot recover or what? What are our chances?
