Advanced Map Making Tutorials Part 1 - Spawn Setup

I frequently get requests for tutorials about various parts of my maps, so I've decided to start a series where I will be going through how to start building a custom minecraft map.

In this first episode we create a world and set up the spawn area.

This series is designed for both Minecraft 1.8 and Minecraft 1.9. Wherever there's a notable difference I will be going through both solutions.

Leave me a comment, or find me elsewhere:

It's a very minor change, but you can set the chain command block to conditional to prevent it from even attempting to process its target selector if the spawnpoint command fails (as the tp command is looking for the same target).

The explanation is very good! But it's really an "advanced" tutorial, because it might get confusing for begginers with all the different coordinates. Expect a lot questions about that. (At least that happened to me)
I really liked the video! ^^

Im really glad that you are doing this series. This way we can see how you go through the process of making a map

Today we start a new, highly requested tutorial series - this is the first episode in my map making series! We start out with how to set up a map.

If you have ideas for map making topics you want to know more about, leave a suggestion!

If they spawn somewhere else, just find that block in where they spawn somehow and then put a detect command which detects the player if they are in that same block. Then, attach a chain command block which teleports you to the spawn/hub if the detect command turns a success.

I loved making maps, but I’ve stopped a bit when they changed the commands cause I had no idea what the new commands were :P

In 1.9 there is an easier way to do the tp command. There was is a new gamerule called SpawnRadius and the setup would go something like this. /gamerule SpawnRadius 1 and then set your world spawn. Next, place a repeat command block facing down and in a place where when you die you will spawn I top of it. The command block needs to have this command in it /tp @a[r=2, m=0] 0 1 0. The way this works is the /gamerule command makes it so that the /setworldspawn command acts like the /spawnpoint command in that it makes you always spawn on the exact same block but all other features of the /setworldspawn command works the same. This does not change the size of the spawn chunks. The command block is always teleporting any player in survival mode that is at the world spawn spot to 0 1 0. I hope this information helped. - dogfaceboy

Hello, if you are on 1.12-1.14.4 you have to replace "m=0" with "gamemode=survival"
Hope I helped

I accidentaly placed a command block above the command block clock that sets your gamemode to survival, and I cant destroy it no matter how many times I enter and exit the world.

Awesome tutorial as always. A question about the spawnpoint command. I'm using a scoreboard selector to determine if the player needs to be teleported away from the worldspawn area (and put them at 0, 0, 0 the lobby). That actually works fine. However, while testing I gave myself a score that would force me to the lobby, after which I tested my new spawnpoint with "spawn". As expected I spawned exactly at 0 0 0. Then, by just changing my scoreboard score (allowing me back to in the worldspawn area), I found my spawnpoint was automatically reset to the worldspawn location. I did this by typing Spawn in in the command line. Why is that? I thought once my 0 0 0 spawnpoint is set by command block, I would have to tp myself back to the worldspawn area via command line, and force a reset of my spawnpoint (to the worldspawn) by typing in the command myself. Why would changing my scoreboard selector in the lobby have any affect on my spawnpoint, when there are no command blocks acting on me. Am I not getting something?

Hey, i really like your map making tutorial, they are pretty useful as I am starting to embark on the journey as a map maker as well. But i do have 1 question though. If I create the world in creative mode, and since the mechanics to set spawnpoint and teleport players from spawn chunk to 0, 0 targets at players in survival mode, wouldn't the mechanics not work because the players spawn in creative mode and the mechanics target at players in survival mode? Any way to fix it without spawn pads.

I was thinking of creating a scoreboard to toggle between Edit mode (1) and non-Edit mode (0) like booleans. the mechanics to teleport players to spawn only targets on players in non-Edit mode, while targetting players in any gamemode. But do you have a better version of it?

Thanks in advance.
