Crochet Tension TIPS for Absolute BEGINNERS (How to Hold Yarn When Crocheting)

Even though the Atreyu Crochet channel is for beginners, I think it's necessary to build upon the basics. The great thing about crocheting is that even the most complicated of patterns can still be broken down to the very basics of crocheting.

Don't ever approach a crochet pattern with doubt. Simply break down the pattern and approach it one stitch at a time. If a stitch is foreign to you, then find a YouTube tutorial on it, learn the stitch, and resume with the pattern. Although our starting point is that of a beginner, it is also true that that is not our destination.

i need to thank you over and over again for this video. i’d been struggling with tension ever since the start and it was because of how i was holding it, it was atrocious - i couldn’t keep it from slipping away so would tightly wrap it around my hand in countless different ways which made my tension so varied and ruined the look of my crochet projects. after every stitch i’d have to wrap it again and again. i have looked into every tension video, explanation and advice out there. ever since this video where you simply showed your way of holding the yarn in your left hand, i have made SO many things that i thought i’d never get to make due to the struggle with tension, but now my tension is pretty much perfect! all the progress i have made i have you to thank for!! thank you so much :)

Thank you for saying HOW to keep tension instead of just saying keep it the same. I made a few doilies b4 so yarn and yarn hooks are gigantic. Also your other vids with the yarn close to you and you rolled it around helped me, I put my yarn in a big plastic serving dish now it behaves as neatly as a thread roll lol. Great vid as usual!

I've learnt crochet from watching YouTube and the way I control my tension is having the big gap as you call it, I've tried a few other ways as everyone's different, but seems most comfortable for me to do it as I am.

Thank you so much! I’ve been crocheting for so long that it’s hard to explain it to beginners. I’m very excited to try this with the crochet club at the elementary school where I teach. I also have no desire to pass along “my” way of holding my yarn because it’s so odd. Your method is much better.

Not a beginner, but just curious 😊 my grandma taught me when I was 9 …. I’m 61 now 😂 and she had me chain over and over and over….she said I was supposed to wrap around my pinky along with what you do but that didn’t work out for me …. Just have to try different ways that will be comfortable for you….she had me practice every stitch till the yarn was a fuzzy mess 😂

Im having so much difficulty with tension... no matter what hold i try its either too tight or too loose :(
