Best of 2021 Trailer

It’s been a year…. Actually, two years, since we ran our annual Best of… series, throwing a spotlight on this year’s harvest of cinematic standouts. Some of these titles will be very familiar to you; they are part of the ubiquitous Oscar-worthy conversation (The Power of the Dog ; Spencer ). Others have been feted at Cannes (Titane ; Annette ), and several have shown extensively already at the VIFF Centre (Drive My Car ). But in this strange and difficult year, there are several other films we are able to highlight here which may have escaped your attention; movies which never got the opportunity to show on the big screen because of the pandemic, like Andrei Konchalovsky’s riveting Dear Comrades and Maria Sodahl’s heartbreaking Hope. (Two more, In the Heights and Zola , were released almost as soon as cinemas reopened, and before some of us were comfortable venturing in them.)
