That threw me back in time lol.
I did much the same thing when i was 18, i had two reels of solid core wire. (that's what i had).
I knotted the wires around the wooden fence at the bottom of the garden.
The other ends were stuffed into an old black and decker 240v drill.
The drill gearbox was set on the slowest setting.
I had to walk down the garden as the length shortened.
If i appled too much tension, well the two wires became one lol.
The silly things i did all those years ago, that twisted wire was used in everything lol.

So how do you this with a pair of wires longer than your left and right hand span? Clamp the other end to a vice? hand to a buddy?
