My criminal past didn’t stop my dream of becoming a nurse

It was shocking and heartbreaking to learn an old charge on my record could potentially hurt my career, especially because of the injustice of the charge when I was just defending myself!

Omg I am so happy u made my life. After losing my mother in my 20s to breast cancer I jad always wanted to become a hospice nurse but unfortunately I am a recovering addict and I ended up becoming a case manager and CRS which I didn't think was possible until I was 40. Now I am thinking about enrolling back into school and become a RN. My criminal history is more then 11 yrs ago and I really pray that I can make this dream a reality!!

Thank you so much. I accepted a new grad offer today and had to disclose my charges from 7 years ago. Dui, hit and run property damage, battery, and driving with suspended license. I wasfreaking out, wanted to cry. Its why i didnt pursue nursing sooner. But i told them everything. I hope they still hire me 😢

I would have sued the people responsible for not removing it. It sucks, but an application is a legal document and lying on it is, in fact, a crime... at least in my state.

You must always report any arrests prior to your admission at a University, and most employers. How do I know? It happened to me when I got my B.A. (in Historiography). So embarrassing. Had to go talk to the Dean of the University twice. It was a trespassing charge I pled Nolo Contendre to, some 15 years before.

I am in my 50s and have just been accepted into the RN program at my local college. I have a shoplifting arrest that was dismissed and a DUI charge both 30 years ago. I marked No on convicted charges in my application, I didn't think of DUI as a criminal offense. I just took my fingerprint background check and I haven't been able to breathe with anxiety.

❤ thank you for making this 🙏 trying to enrol in nursing in Australia with a charge on my record also from self defence in serious DV and my ex when he unfairly gained custody was charged with child endangerment 1 yr later and his charge was added to my rap sheet as Im on Borth Cert as mother. Am currently contesting. I will not give up on my dream to care for people in a clinical setting.

Very few jobs require no criminal record. Most have guidelines in place that they can hire so long as the conviction was more than 7 years ago.

You’re amazing! Thanks for sharing that, as a gay man who has dealt with domestic abuse and finally stood up for myself, it’s a terrifying prospect. You’re a queen! 👸

Most jobs will hire you as long as you are honest..some things they won't hire for like theft and S crimes but if you disclose them they are usually understanding.I'm an addict I have been clean from opiates and h for about five and a half years now. I never thought I could get a job but there are a lot of people that go to the methadone clinic I go to that side as long as they disclose their criminal past they've been able to get jobs

The judicial system is flawed. You were a defendant. If you successfully defended yourself, disclosure should not be required. If a judge ruled in favor of the petitioner ( against you) you must disclose.
