DJI Mic 2 vs Rode Wireless Pro & DJI Mic 1: Review & Audio Quality Test

Tony Northrup review's the best microphone for creators, youtubers, vloggers, or just about anyone who needs to record one or two people on camera: The DJI Mic 2. This system supports up to two wireless mics which can be clipped directly to your shirt or held with a magnet through your clothing. You can also attach a separate lapel microphone so the mics themselves aren't as visible on camera.

Tony compares them to the original DJI Mics. The new mics offer noticeably improved audio quality with greater dynamic range and better cancellation of background noise. The new DJI Mic 2 also supports 32-bit float audio with internal recording, which is great if you need to recover talent who shouts. The new receiver also has a nice dial, and the transmitters/mics can connect directly to the DJI Osmo Pocket 3 or smartphones & computers via Bluetooth.

Tony also compares the DJI Mic 2 to the Rode Wireless Pro mics. Compared to the DJI Mic 2, the Rode Wireless Pro mics are significantly larger. The user interface is clumsier, without a front- or rear-facing screen nor a touchscreen. The Rode mics have good bassy sound, however.

I’m about to cancel my order. DJI mic 2 sounds way worse than both??

Thanks for the review. I've been using the DJI mic#1 for a year and the ISO record has saved me many times. I hired a pro sound opp with a full pro SQN mixer to record voxpops at an event with me. At certain times all he got was breakup and chaff due to busy frequencies (lots of crews/local wifi etc). I bought the DJI kic as a handy pocket backup and it lSO recorded perfectly. It also sounded less noisy and nicer than the pro kit which cost 10x as much!

I have two DJI Mic v1 kits, one of which I haven't used except for charging it. Most of the things I disliked have been fixed but the 3.5mm cable seems to be as unnecessarily short as before. I bought coiled replacements but it's something I know others have complained about and it would have been such a small thing to remedy. I bought the DJI Mics despite reports that the previous Rode system sounded better because everything else about the DJI seemed to suit me better. I'm actually quite surprised that Rode stuck to pretty much the same design in the face of how DJI had moved the user experience on.

As for sound comparisons, I may be an exception but nobody who is going to listen to my audio is going to be an audio engineer or get an opportunity to compare what he or she hears with the same audio from another system. In my opinion, we spend too much time chasing goals that only we care about. One of the mics I use is a $300 Rode shotgun mic and nobody has ever walked out of a training video of mine complaining that I should have used a $1500 Schoeps. The reason is good enough is good enough. I'll buy whatever makes my life easiest in spite of the fact the quality of output may be 5% down on an alternative. Why? Because it's only by also experiencing the alternative side-by-side that a lay person - the only type of person I create for - would know.

Already ordered the new ones this morning. The first generation was A-M-A-Z-I-N-G and still has a permanent home in my bag.

Great video review. I also wanted to thank you for the Part 107 I was able to study and been a certified drone pilot for over 2 years now. It has helped me and made people feel more comfortable to hire meafter I have shown them the ID. Thank you🙏

I’ve been extremely happy with my rode wireless pro kit. Just amazing. DJI is really pumping out so many great products also it’s amazing to see. Can’t wait for them to hit actual consumer camera market (full frame)

Much easier than the old fashioned type of transmitter that i have now. And has 2 transmitters = game changer

Can you do a comparison between a direct bluetooth connection between the transmitter and phone, and a phone with receiver and transmitter setup? Great video. Thanks!

My experience with Rode is poor battery life (fails to charge). I have the DJI Mic 1 ( love it) and just ordered the Mic 2 combo. Thanks for the review.

Thanks for this review, I've got the DJI 1 mics and absolutely love them, but the 32 float makes me totally want the 2s!

Ordered as soon as I got the email from B&H! I've been waiting for this since purchasing the Osmo Pocket 3 creator combo last year!

Seems like Mic 2 had the noise reduction turned on (yellow grid in the menu at 10:47), that's why it performed better in the faucet test. However, this also makes it sound flatter. Did you try a test with noise cancellation turned off?
