Eating in a calorie deficit is at the same time the most easy and most difficult thing I have ever done.

This 5 min video sums up perfectly what people should really know about the weight (fat) loss. Amazing, Layne!

Satiety is more present on a high fat diet. This is pretty demonstrable. It's EASY to overeat fruit. Not so easy to overeat meat. Try it. There's ALWAYS room for pie after turkey.

I know you’ve taught on this many times, but I appreciate you bringing it up again! Thank you

Good information is worth repeating with all the nonsense out there. Love the new editing too!

I agree with what you are saying on the aspect of fat loss, but there is also crucial part of this discussion. Body is designed to feel the best when it uses carbs for energy. When you are on a high carbon low-fat diet, you will feel like a race car compared to a high fat, low-carb diet that makes you feel like family sedan.

You did an excellent job of explaining this in Fat Loss Forever

HFLC is much easier for staying in a caloric deficit. You rarely ever feel hungry once you’re fat adapted. Plus you’re energy levels stay consistent. Just not the best for high intensity workouts or strength gains. Carbs will always be a better fuel source in that regard.

There is no doubt that both low carb and low fat approaches would work. But if mixing high carbs and high fats together scores the highest on the insulin index wouldn't it be smart to avoid mixing high fats and high carbs? So macronutrient composition is still important?

This is soooo misunderstood, and diets that confuse and misrepresent reality by promoters motivated by sales make it more difficult for people to understand. Couple that with the fact that most people are receptive to a 'lose weight fast' shortcut, we have a herd of ignorance clomping the treadmills at chain-store gyms (you know which ones). I was guilty of the same. Thanks Thomas Delauer and Chiropractor Dr Berg. But, it was when I got serious about my fitness and started listening to men who have been where I'm going, that I then began to see real changes and took control. Thanks for putting this content out there.

LIKED THE VID Layne: I have been subbed to you for a while now. I tell people whenever I have discussions/debates on fat loss and nutrition that CICO absolutely is a proven formula for fat loss/fat gain. As a PROUD OMINIVORE I believe in a balanced diet tilted toward higher protein consumption, especially the older I get (I'm now 41). I do mostly RT and I sprinkle in some AT to keep from spilling over with glucose in hopes of inhibiting lipogenesis. The issue that I see people have with CICO is the fact that they don't truly understand what all factors into ones TDEE. So like you alluded to, they fuckup on the figures and underestimate on their intake and overestimate on their output. Of course if a person does that, then you could see why they say CICO is bullshit. A kcal is indeed a kcal but where it comes from depends on how much kcals the body will use in metabolizing that particular macro. Keep up with the science Dr. Norton, for it is the proper application of knowledge wherein the power lies. NO DOUBT!

Benjamin Bikman shows that in fat-adapted people on keto fat is burned in mitochondria in a higher rat - uncoupled versus coupled - just to promote heat If thats true it must be beneficial for the lch diet or?

The reason people lose lean body mass on low carb diets is almost entirely because of the loss of water weight due to lower glycogen stores

Pretty simple formula
High protein -210=
Moderate fat-60>
Low carb -30>
————————
Total calories 1500 if you max fat and carbs out.
Work them in your calorie deficit above is my example (5’11” 188lbs 14%bf 57 yo)focusing on protein first.

I have a feeling this will roast keto and IM fasting (fat burning), again, as opposed to actual fat loss being the result of caloric deficit. In any case, can't wait :)

This goes to show that Dr. Naiman was right about old school bodybuilders saying, "dieting down with protein & carbs is good. And, dieting down with protein & fats is also good. The power of protein is truly amazing.

Great content Layne, and congrats for consolidating it less than 6 minutes. I still get confused, however, when you do fasted workouts: assuming you are eating regularly below your BMR, wouldn't the lack of carbohydrates help your body use stored fat as energy, and thus losing it faster?

Hey I'm stuck with two questions now.

What if you bring nutrient density into this comparison between low carb and high carb diets? Both wholefood no junk etc. Based on what I've heard a low carb diet is more nutrient dense and as such it's easier to overeat on a high carb diet, unless your calorie demand is really high. This four week trial you mention seems unimpressive to me because, the effects of undereating micronutrients would not reveal themselves in such a short time.

Another thing I wondered about are the different uses for macro nutrients. Carbs are energy, that's it; fat is energy, and used to make nerve tissue, and used to build cells, and used to make hormones, etc; proteins can be converted to sugar to serve as energy (at the cost if energy), is used to maintain muscle tissue, is used to build cells, is used to traffic fat around our blood etc.
It seems to me fat and protein serve a great many purposes so how does that fit into you energy equation? How am I to know what part of my fat and protein intake actually counts as calories in?
