I used to be a car salesman. The last time I talked to LDS missionaries, I realized they were using sales techniques. They're trying to sell you something. A smile is important.

The obsession with happiness is so American. Jesus is portrayed more than once crying, with fits of anger, and even fear. The whole range of emotions is part of the human experience.

Despite the fact that in the Bible, Jesus is described as a “man of sorrows, well-acquainted with grief”

i call this "church mom smile", it's very "everything is falling apart but i'm not allowed to have public emotions other than happy"

Bible says we are to mourn with those who mourn. When I lost my husband to cancer, I was treated like I had a lack of faith, if I didn’t act like it was just another day…..carry on with a smile. It was insane! It just made me spiral into depression very deeply, having to ‘suck it up’, and put on a happy face for the unfeeling narcissistic psychopaths.
I left over six years ago. They can keep their Stepford wives routine.

It’s like in Roald Dahl’s book “Danny, Champion of the World”: If your mouth is smiling but your eyes aren’t, it’s a fake.

Jennette McCurdy's book "I'm Glad My Mom Died" is such a great read.

Even their smiles are not their own, their entire being is promotion for the cult.
I don't miss it AT ALL

The Tom Cruise smile which inspired the look of Patrick Bateman during the development of the film.

Jesus wasn’t always happy. And He didn’t promise we would be. In fact He says He is close to the brokenhearted.

when I was a missionary i constantly told myself and others I was the happiest I’d ever been in my whole life. Looking back at pictures my eyes look dead. I see joy in my photos now ✨

That’s such a depressing rhetoric - as if you’re never allowed to be sad or have negative feelings incase someone else doubts your faith!

My bartender mom taught me the opposite, her bartender smile. Soft in the eyes and a little pull in the corners of the mouth. Makes people want to spill their guts to you.

Converting as an adult, I hate the idea of proselytizing. Religion is a personal choice and bothering other people in their day to day is just unwarranted.

In the 70s my father in law had Mormons call to his door, he invited them in but refused to talk about religion. They talked and as they were leaving gave him a book of Mormon. About a year later another set of Mormons called and he invited them in again. As they were leaving they offered him a book of Mormon again. He said oh no thank you, i already have one. He pulled the book off the bookcase and opened it. What he had forgotten was that a friend of his had given him some devils Lettuce. He didn't smoke the stuff, so stashed it in a place nobody would ever look for it. So the book opens and a little baggie of green sin fell out. The Mormons practically ran, and in all the years since they have never been back 😂😂😂😂

My bishop (I'm currently trapped) has the creepiest fakest smile I've seen on anyone, and it only makes sense that he's from Utah

I lived in South Jordan for two years. My husband and I called it the “Stepford Smile”.

Lol, as a former girlfriend of a Mormon man years ago, I found the people reminded me of the Movie STEPFORD WIVES. Everybody cutesy, and happy & grinning from ear to ear.... Unnerved me sometimes

As someone who’s lived in Utah their whole life, I can guarantee you. We are not a happy valley.

When I lived in Utah, “get over it” was a common thing to hear, and “grudge” was a four-letter word. If you didn’t want to be around someone who had hurt you then you were holding a grudge.
