Peter, I just solved a slightly different problem with this piece of valuable information and I can tell you that I spent days working around the issue with no effective results. I was stuck around project UV modifier. BAKE was the path to follow.
In my case, I get the best result with ray distance at 0 (two meshes separated around 100m on z-axis) and unwrapped mesh with "project from view (bounds)", mostly because of mesh number of faces. Just perfect. THANK YOU!

canu go back like 5 steps and explain how u put the different meshes in different sections of blender? I cant seem to do that...
