The Darien Gap 🌍 The Most Dangerous Places on Earth

Did you know it’s impossible to drive from North America to South America by road? 🌎 The Darien Gap, a 160 km stretch of dense jungle, swamps, and mountains, is the reason why 🌳. This dangerous area blocks the Pan-American Highway, making road construction here nearly impossible and extremely expensive 💸. The terrain is harsh, with extreme humidity and constant rainfall, but that’s not the only danger. The Darien Gap is also a lawless zone, home to smugglers, criminals, and armed gangs, making it one of the most treacherous places on Earth 💀. Despite this, thousands of migrants attempt to cross these impassable jungles every year in search of a better life, but the risks are immense. Many never reach their destination, lost to the wild or falling victim to the lawlessness that reigns in this region. The Darien Gap remains an impenetrable barrier between North and South America, cutting off what could be the world’s longest continuous road 🚫.

Weather is not the problem. Messing with the cartel is.

Even in the forest, humans are the worst and most feared predators

The cartel should be reason enough for anyone to not try crossing it 😭

If you want to see a raw experience of crossing the Darien Gap, Timmy Karter and Bald & Bankrupt did series together on travelling the migrant path up to the Mexican/US border. Scary stuff crossing that jungle

I’m from Panama. The difficulty is really how dangerous the area is. Only the indigenous people of Emberá and Wounan know how to move in Darien. Rivers that can get dried, and then get really dangerous. Any mosquito, snake or spider can kill you. Specially the Snakes X and Patocas (also known as the 10minutes because that’s how much time you have). There’s a lot of people and organizations there that don’t want to be found so if you step in their way goodbye. Also, there’s criminal organizations that won’t hesitate to take you or your organs. For those many reasons. The area is in-communicated. Past certain area there’s nothing. And our government is working hard to close it for good. Is not only a Sanctuary for our animals and plants (those migrants leave a lot of trash in their way is crazy) is dangerous for anyone to cross it. So better be closed soon. We started closing various entries. Is not that we don’t like migrants but all the cons are huge for the Darien Province and their people.

"Did you know that it's physically impossible to cross this thing?"

It's simply politics, bro, and not geography.

Let America discover oil or some resource at the darien gap and watch the gap get bridged.

If the US wanted a road there, there would be one. That's the only reason the project "failed".

If the US wanted a road there, we would have a road there

The Darien gap might be a difficult terrain to create a highway but its far from impossible, it just requires a lot of money and the will to do it. I feel the will is what's most lacking because of the US fearing that it would enable much higher levels of immigration into their territory and therefor they either refuse to help financially or they actively incentivize the local governments not to pursue it

We planned to migrate through that way. Thank God, we dropped that plan now

I can't believe there are people who were once innocent kids and then they were like "I think I want to be an evil kidnapper hiding in a dangerous jungle"

I hiked this in 1987. Panama to Columbia. It took 10 days. One of the best trips ever.
