How to stop snoring. What causes snoring? Is it healthy to snore? When should you worry about your snoring?

#snoring #howtostopsnoring #snoringcauses

WHY DOES SNORING HAPPEN?
Snoring occurs when your upper airways narrow too much, causing turbulent airflow. This then makes the surrounding tissues vibrate, producing noise.

SNORING CAUSES:
Many things can cause snoring. Causes can include:
* being overweight
* alcohol
* medications - like sleeping pills
* very low soft palate
* nasal and sinus problems
* smoking
* enlarged adenoids, tonsils
* hormonal changes - pregnancy, menopause

IS SNORING SERIOUS?
Snoring may be a sign of sleep apnea, which can cause you to stop breathing during your sleep. If you think that is happening to you, please see your doctor for further tests.

SNORING TREATMENTS:
1. Lose weight
2. Drink less alcohol
3. Sleep on your side
4. Avoid sleeping pills
5. Treat nasal congestion
6. Avoid smoking
7. Devices, products and gadgets - Mandibular advancement devices, Tongue Stabilizers, Nasal Strips, Chin Straps
8. Surgery

Just love the Kiwi accent. Love the Kiwi people too. I've been to NZ and they are the nicest people I've ever met along with Canadians. Rob from the UK

Ok, this is something I’ve struggled with. I’ll try to keep this short and to the point.
1) I’m not over weight
2) I don’t smoke at all, and rarely drink as I snore real bad when I do drink alcohol.
3) I do use a custom mouth device which helps a little bit as it holds my jaw forward keeping it from sagging backward into my throat while sleeping.
4) A cpap machine works (I have mild sleep apnea) but I don’t wear it because I can’t sleep while wearing any of the available devices.
5)THIS IS MOST INTERESTING!!
I did s raw fruit and vegetables diet for 6 weeks a few years ago. It wasn’t until after I finished that I realized that (my wife confirmed) I didn’t snore at all during the entire fast!
My conclusion is that there is at least some correlation between food and snoring.
The trouble is found in my own inability to discipline myself to go back to that raw fruit and vegetable diet and slowly introduce the every day foods back in so I can discover which one is triggering snoring.
6) Good hydration reduces my snoring.
7) Sleeping on a wedge pillow helps a lot, but is very uncomfortable when I turn on my side while sleeping, which I’ve concluded causes neck issues which causes migraines.
I’m still searching for more conclusive evidence as to what I should do.
I hope this can help someone.

I fell asleep on a crowded bus once, but it was empty when I woke up.

I am going to forward this to my wife. If this doesn't help or if she doesn't listen, I'll be moving to another room. Signed, sleep deprived nervous wreck.

I started snoring after menopause and putting on weight. Separate rooms helped us both sleep. He complained about my snoring keeping him awake but his didn't bother me. It is lovely not having someone hitting you all night 🙄

I'm just watching because I love the accent. The advice seems solid though.

I come from a long line of snorers. I am the only one in the family that doesn't snore.  Many are using CPAP machines and are seriously overweight.
The only thing that stopped me snoring was a combination of all of the foliowing:
- quitting alcohol
- eating mostly raw plant foods
- eating only between 5 - 9pm...everyday
- fasting 72 hrs every 3 months
It took me over a decade to work out the above magic formula. I am now slim, youthful feeling, energetic and a deep, deep sleeper.

I don't have a snoring issue, however, I have heard that learning to play an instrument that strengthens the throat muscles helps a lot. An instrument such as a didgeridoo for example.

Great advice Dr. Bailey! According to some clinicians mouth tape can be helpful as well as certain types of breathwork and playing the didgeridoo for both sleep apnea and snoring because it strengthens the throat muscles.

Thank you for this important topic. Does the CPAP machine help with snoring? I know it's for sleep apnea but it seems like snoring and sleep apnea are related.

Hello Dr. Sam! Glad you are back! I found out that the best way to stop snoring is to sleep on my side. It works great. Thank you Dr. Sam.

I had sleep apnea for years and used a Bipap machine. I lost weight and no longer have apnea. I dream all the time.

What about mouth taping? I do it to sleep better, but I also notice less sound from other family members who do to.

Yep, had apnea. Couldn’t tolerate cpac. Went under the knife, 20 years ago. Doc said I would have the most pain ever for 10 days. He was right. Drugs did help. Now I either don’t snore, or purr as my wife says.
