Ukrainian Marines crossed the “Left Bank” of the Dnipro River. What does that mean?

Left bank or right bank describes the location of the riverbank based on the flow of the river.

It is a lot easier to describe location using this method instead of cardinal directions, especially if the river meanders.

To clarify, it's always the same answer, no matter what bank you're on - walk downstream, the bank will be labelled correctly.

In Ukraine the term “left bank” is not just a military term it’s a term used by civilians to describe which side of the Dnipro you live on and is used in names of neighborhoods

It's not only the military, It's a petty common phrase for everyone in Ukraine. We say 'right-bank' and 'left-bank' Kyiv all the time

Someone in Mariia Veschunova's comments actually attempted to correct her when she used the term "left bank" last week. I was like, "Dude, she's literally Ukrainian. I think she's on top of the local vernacular...."

Her content is criminally underrated by the way. Highly recommended if you want high quality daily Ukraine updates from a Ukrainian content creator.

My mentor told me long ago that whenever you learn something new, it’s a good day! Today is a good day, thanks. I was so confused before because on a map it looks like Ukraine is on the left side of the river 😵‍💫

As a Ukrainian who heard this term so many times and had no idea why it was named like this, thank you!

In Quebec, if you "go up" from Quebec City to Montreal, even though Montreal is South of Quebec, it's because of the River's direction. You are "going up" against the current. And we see go down when it's the other way. (roughly translated from a french saying dating back to travel by boat).

To clarify and simplify - face the same direction as the flow of the river. The left bank is on your left hand side.

The "left bank" means they've been pointlessly sacrificed

Thank God for this explanation! I’ve been silently wondering for months

So the left side if you’re facing down stream. Like Maryland is the left bank of the Potomac. Eastern shore is the left bank of the Chesapeake. The Nile it’s actually on the left side on a map because the Nile flows north.

Thanks for bringing this up.
My town of Lauf in Germany has two train stations which are labeled “Lauf Links“ (left) and „Lauf Rechts“ (right) for the same reason.

This is also why you hear the terms Upper and Lower Egypt for South and North Egypt. The idea is that water flows down, so the left bank is the one on your left as you go with the flow, and upriver is the upper part

As a white water kayaker, we use the same terminology for every river.
