Everyone just received the notice that GameStop is designating some of their stores as “retro” sites. We are all wondering if GameStop is trained well enough to spot fake retro games, so we are going to test it!

One of the most frustrating things is when someone working there says “we don’t take these too old” they don’t know to just type the name in the system and check…

Awesome video and great concept - so well executed! I think the best solution for GameStop would be to hire employees who specialize in retro for authentication purposes. Could go far in building more trust with the community.

My issue is not that a fake can play the same as real, its when you sell a fake as the same price as real. Fakes go for about $4 each from overseas so buying them for real prices is the issue.

I personally think expecting a minimum wage employee to spot all the fakes is asking too much out of them(not you guys, I mean gamestop asking that). When I worked at Lowes we had a "specialist" role and this person was paid more and knew a lot more about products. Also gamestop, I'll do that job :)

That kid needs a big raise in GameStop ! We need more people like him ! Plus he’s wearing a GHOST shirt !🤘🏼

I buy loose Gameboy/Color and Advance carts, and always check for the very small embossed number and occasionally letter print to the right side of the label. Oh the amount of fakes I've spotted in stores is unreal. Great video : )

Forget the fakes. Working at a Game Stop and not knowing what an NES cartridge looks like is wild lol. I recall watching certain anti-reseller YouTubers say this is why going to game stores is better than buying from scumbag resellers - you get the real knowledge of video games!

GS Manager here. Stores are definitely still learning and I really appreciate this video as a learning opportunity. I will fully admit the Metroid would have got me too- so thanks for helping me learn!

Great stuff here. I really enjoyed your journey in this one. I’m glad to see some of them are trained in this. Hopefully they can get better at spotting fakes as this goes for them. I still don’t see retro at GameStops up here but this has me motivated to look again. Great work!

Mannnn not really sure about this. "Not trying to get anyone in trouble" but giving the location info and voice IDs of the employees is not exactly hiding anything :/ GameStop district managers aren't known for their great leadership lol.

This is a really cool experiment. Really enjoyed it. ❤

So the black blob you will see on repro games is just covering a reprogrammable chip. If you were to remove the blob and then shine some light in the hole it would erase the data on this chip. It cheaper to use a reprogrammable chip then a dedicated chip.

Used to work at a gamestop and the only “training” i received was how to look up games on the computer. Other than the managers goon it was a fun job, still would never want to work there again though.

Definitely a training issue. This happens especially with fast turn around of people. As the employee in the last GameStop said, he did the training a year ago. Guaranteed most of the others haven't gone through the training.

I love that this video isn't "Gotcha journalism" but a sincere inquiry into where GameStop (at least in your area) is at when it comes to retro knowledge. Well done.

Gotta remember that most GameStop employees aren’t gamers. They aren’t as knowledgeable as someone like Scott the Woz. Most employees are 17 to 22 year olds working to pay for college and weed.
