Volunteers made a dangerous discovery in a greenbelt near the Elliot Bay Marina over the weekend. More than 80 propane tanks were pulled from an unsanctioned encampment in the green space just north of the marina’s parking lot.

The non-profit We Heart Seattle and two other volunteer groups worked to remove the tanks over the Labor Day holiday weekend. We Heart Seattle's Program Director Tim Emerson said about 20 of the 80 tanks still had highly flammable propane inside.

How do you accumulate so many when there is a significant core charge for the bottle? Are these all stolen off of bbq grills and rvs?

Public camping should be illegal. Less than a quarter accepting help? All I know is I read an article 20 years ago in Real Change, where they interviewed a homeless guy who lived in The Jungle. Upon asking him why he lived there he responded, "Because I don't like rules." I was shocked they chose to print that.

Let's be real about this growing crisis. There is no any other solution but all of us in Seattle must open our homes and take recent migrants and homeless in.
