Volunteers remove more than 80 propane tanks during Seattle homeless encampment cleanup

Volunteers made a dangerous discovery in a greenbelt near the Elliot Bay Marina over the weekend. More than 80 propane tanks were pulled from an unsanctioned encampment in the green space just north of the marina’s parking lot.

The non-profit We Heart Seattle and two other volunteer groups worked to remove the tanks over the Labor Day holiday weekend. We Heart Seattle's Program Director Tim Emerson said about 20 of the 80 tanks still had highly flammable propane inside.

This is a government created situation with the high homeless population. People still need to cook, and propane is an excellent fuel for that. Campers have proved that propane is safe for outdoor use for decades. It is often the primary heat and hot water fuel source in RVs, as batteries and solar just don't offer the same storage density, low cost, and energy density as LPG fuels.
