NASA & SpaceX Revealed New Plan For Permanent Moon Base after winning Blue Origin's lawsuit
Moon City: Famed Nasa Engineer Reveals
Why It’s A Higher Priority Than Mars

A New Space Race is coming! This time, the battlefield is set on Mars.
The Mars race will be the fiercely competitive environment between various national space agencies involving crewed missions to Mars, land on Mars, or set a crewed base there.
However, before setting foot on the Red Planet, humans need to establish a base on our nearest neighbor first.
The Russian, Chinese, and American space agencies tout the plans to conquer the Moon.
Private companies like SpaceX are no less competitive.
Therefore, there are many reasons to conclude that building cities on the Moon should take precedence over Mars.
Homer Hickam, a famed NASA engineer, made the same point.
Let’s find out more in today’s episode of Great SpaceX!

Homer Hickam is perhaps best known as the inspiration for October Sky, a 1999 movie about growing up in West Virginia and building a rocket against the odds. He was first inspired when, as a child, he watched Sputnik flying in the sky in 1957.
Following the release of his latest memoir Don’t Blow Yourself Up, Hickam says that he now hopes a future Moon city could inspire people in the same way.
“I'm 78 years old, and I hope to live long enough to see the lights in a little crater on the Moon from a little community,” Hickam tells Inverse.
His comments come as private companies and national agencies ramp up efforts to reach further into space. SpaceX is building its Starship rocket in Texas, with plans for an orbital test as soon as possible and a crewed mission to Mars this decade. Blue Origin last month announced plans for a commercial space station, and founder Jeff Bezos has expressed support for giant cities orbiting Earth.

There are so many great reasons for going to the Moon first! Most important is learning just what it takes to actually live in space and do it in a way where help is not that far away. Having a base and manufacturing on the Moon means a launch to other further away destinations will be far simpler given the lessened gravity. The Moon has valuable resources that would make it viable for business to get interested and would provide resources that Earthlings need and the science that can be conducted on the Moon would be priceless!

We do need a moon Base to prepare and modify for deeper space😁👍👊🔥

Baby steps are what is needed when considering a permanent base on Mars. The logical approach one would imagine would be to establish a base on the moon. The lessons that we would learn from establishing ourselves on the moon would be invaluable for the much grander plan of sending people further afield.
Just saying.

As we see daily w SpaceX, red tape is 90% of the battle. The 20 years for a terrestrial mine is 4 years of finding the right site, 15+ years of red tape, & 1 year of building infrastructure to start mining. As to profitability, that is the BIG question that might never come true.

We need a president that loves tech for making everyone's lives amazing. We have the tech. We just need the leader that is all about truly helping all people.

I think that a moon base is essential to learning how to survive very long term stays in an atmosphere that is alien to our bodies. Right now we are limiting our stays on the ISS because of the negative effects on our bodies. When we stay in a situation where we have to live with less gravity than our bodies are used to it causes multiple problems. We need to develop artificial gravity for the moon base or else figure out how to live in space full time. No matter what anyone in the space industry says, we are just not quite ready to leave planet earth permanently yet. The astronauts that return from the ISS cannot wait to see family and feel gravity again, not to mention having a real meal, with real food.

Totally think we need a moon base, I think it needs to be a pretty high priority..

Yes! We should take advantage of the window of opportunity that is opening. Great Elon! Great SpaceX!

Will the FAA have to approve the landing sites on the Moon and on Mars?

SpaceX could send a fleet of moon landers with each doing a specific function to support a general goal. One dedicated to power generation, another for fuel generation, another for food, another for living, etc., etc. Afterwards, humans would arrive to start operations. I would think it wouldn’t take too long to have a permanent working base. IMO!

I agree. Start with your Production basics and separate living on Lunar, make what you need ON this base ( cuts down both production and transport costs back to Earth ) We already know more about Mars than we did 20+ years ago, so another 5+ years could triple that knowledge for potential building sites, then and only then move towards Mars ( even building a "Halfway" orbital station for refueling/emergencies, between Lunar and Mars ) could again, cut down on overall costs ( not talking about Monetary, but Human cost ). But my biggest concern as always still revolves around MONEY, WHY? "MUST" it cost ++$Billions, even to launch a 1st stage Rocket, do the damn job for the NEED of Humanity, not the GREED of Humanity.

It would be very smart to build a base on the moon first to create almost like another livable planet if we were to terraform it. Not to mention if shit hits the fan on the earth, the civilization on the moon would still prosper. If we every wanted to go to Mars from the moon the benefit would be astounding, less fuel to get into space and a greater velocity would be giving since the moon revolves around the earth.

How can more significant science be conducted on Moon than on ISS?

We should not be considering building big bases on other planets or moons, we should look to space stations orbiting these bodies for living and small stations to work and mine.

When we all have everything we want and need, there will be no need for war.

Establishing a mine on the moon would be easier since there are no regulations and umpteen permits required.

Next major Milestone, first zero G or Lunar G conception.

They make it sound so easy. Just start mining material from the moon. Do have any idea what the final cost of that material will be once it gets back to Earth??? When figuring all the development costs (think what it takes, to build a large development on earth or a copper mine, heavy equipment, infrastructure) housing, life support, air, water food transportation cost - round trip, labor, what will a dozer operator make on the moon?...I really don't know if it will ever be feasible. Iron, Titanium, Aluminium, Silicon, Calcium, quantitytransported
I love the all the effort that Space X is doing, but the overall final cost???

I think a moon base would take away from a Mars base. We don't need a moon base to get to mars, maybe an orbital platform for refueling in Earth orbit

A moon base would be great practice for a Mars base. However, you mention miming a lot - I've not heard anything on what exactly would be mined there? It would have to be pretty rare on earth to be worth the cost of bringing it back here so what would the miners mine?
