NASA Reveals Major New Lunar Gateway Update!

After three years of awarding SpaceX a contract, NASA is finally set to begin work this year on the inaugural Gateway logistics mission. Will SpaceX continue to develop Dragon XL or wait for Starship to take on this critical task? How will the Lunar Gateway be constructed? All these questions and more will be answered in today's episode of Great SpaceX!
NASA finally turns its attention to the upcoming Gateway Lunar Station. To accomplish this ambitious task, SpaceX will develop a heavily-modified, single-use version of its Dragon 2 spacecraft, boasting increased propellant storage, more cargo space, and a range of other design modifications. This cutting-edge spacecraft will be the key to unlocking the mysteries of the lunar surface and beyond.
Dubbed Dragon XL, this spacecraft would weigh approximately 33,000-35,000 pounds at liftoff, necessitating a fully or partially expendable Falcon Heavy launch for each mission to the Moon. At the time, this was a prudent decision on NASA's part, capitalizing on existing investments and experience with SpaceX and Dragon, while avoiding any major technical obstacles. Nevertheless, more than two years later, NASA has yet to commence work on the contract.

Great episode! Please talk more about the Lunar Gateway!

Actually I think that picture is wrong 🤷‍♂️ if I remember correctly SpaceX's Moonlander will be way bigger than the Lunar Gateway Station. Which is also why some think they should use a modified Star Ship as a space station.

Relativity should focus on space 3D printing instead. Make a space station shell using 3D printing.

A lot of the older programs and plans will probably be discarded. A Starship has more interior space than the ISS. The Lunar Gateway will look different from current designs because they aren't limited to using ULA or Saturn 5 rockets to get them into orbit. The cargo space and weight abilities of Starship will change designs dramatically. A Starship will be able to make orbit for about 1/10th of current cost estimates for Artemis.

Spacex will have starships in moon orbit way before Gateway get its first module delivered 😅

Very interesting project printing rockets this will put the proof of concept to bed if successful, I wish them the very best, Elon space x will have eyes on this 👍

The 3D printed rocket would be an amazing idea.

I remember my first thoughts of 3D Printing back in the day. I thought "Well, that's stupid. Nothing will ever become of 3D Printing." I want to be proven wrong. Really.

Probably Starship 26 for the first launch to orbit. I think by the end of 2023, many federal contracts will be canceled or changed. ULA will be out of the rocket business not long after Starship becomes operational. The company that focuses on space stations, land-based stations, and their support will survive and possibly thrive. I don't think anyone will be able to compete with SpaceX in the rocket industry. Everyone else is too far behind. Vehicles like Dreamchaser might be huge also.

It kinda depends on if a certain legacy company is involved. Should that certain legacy company be involved figure at least 5 years past do and several billion dollars over budget for that certain legacy companies upper echelon management's bonus checks enhancements. Yachts are getting more and more expensive.

I really think that we should make the gateway extremely expandable

I have to wonder if there will be Starship launches with a Falcon 9 upper stage taking over some of these Falcon Heavy missions? The problem with sending a reusable Starship around is it is heavy and thus it takes a lot of tanker Starship missions to get it anywhere, let alone also with a payload inside. However, Starship should be able to achieve LEO easy. So an already mass produced, light Falcon 9 upper stage with a payload on top all housed inside of Starship, possibly a stretched Starship, which SpaceX has already mentioned as an option, should work just fine.

It would be kind of fun though to redo everything so that the lunar gateway goes up all in one go on Starship and then use orbital refilling to get it all to Lunar space.

oh no Relativity are trying to start the Terran Empire!

Very interesting. By the way, I have difficulty communicating because I had a stroke in Broca’s area, the part of the brain that controls speech. 2/8/2021 but I lived again. (My wife helped me compose this.)

SpaceX could make it a 2 part system and be able to same all the boosters that way. Have one Falcon Heavy lift the Dragon XL and the other lift a special second stage as a payload. Then combine the 2 in LEO and use that extra booster to send everything out. This is kind of like refueling the Starship in orbit.

Lunar gateway is just a bureaucratic toll booth at the moon.

Will the lunar Starship have a header tank just where the illustrated docking port is?

I think SpaceX will require some sort of shuttle craft to get crew upto a Starship in orbit (and quite likely to return to earth!). The Dreamchaser would be more ideal as a shuttle with its ability to land, but of course is not crew certified yet. Plus of course, the absence of any abort or launch escape with Starship is a further hindrance to launch a Starship with crew. I think Starship makes an amazing cargo vehicle and maybe interplanetary travel vehicle but one you've got crew into orbit there will be a whole new world of craft to take a crew to Mars with features such as artificial ģravity that keeps Starship an interesting idea but far from the best solution in any functional role. More like a tanker craft rather than a cruise ship. Inthat sense SpaceX NEEDS XL asap.

If we leave it to NASA, it will never get done.
