DJI Phantom 2 Vision Quadcopter Preview

Over the past few months you have been hearing more and more about "Drones" and "quadcopters" flying around capturing photos and video. One of the reasons is a company called DJI has created an easy to use quadcopter.

I am just now starting to learn more and more about these things and when DJI contacted me asking if I wanted to test one out I jumped at the opportunity.

This is a preview of the DJI Phantom 2 Vision. I will be working on an in-depth review and tutorial videos as I learn more about the device.

So far right out of the box it seems pretty much ready to go. It comes with everything you need to get yourself charged up and flying in a matter of an hour. You have your remote controller, the drone itself, the battery and all tools needed to get off the ground.

In the video I mentioned that it seemed light as if the battery was not already in there, I was wrong, the battery was in there. The battery charges up in roughly two hours and will give you 25 minutes of flight time.

The business cards with the QR Codes are actually meant for your to register with DJI. The know that when you are flying one of these things it will draw a crowd. The QR Code on the cards will be linked directly to you. If the person ends up purchasing any of their products you will get points. Those points can be spent in the DJI store to purchase new units and accessories.

You will also find a detailed manual with flying instructions. I am going to make sure to follow them step by step to make sure I am not crashing this $1,200 device and ruining.

The Vision 2 comes equipped with a "high-quality" camera that will capture video at 1080 at 60i, 30 and 25 FPS. On top of that it will capture stills at 14 megapixels in RAW. So this camera SHOOTS RAW which makes me happy.

Now it's time for me to power this thing up and take it for it's first flight. I will keep you updated on the progress with this bad boy as I get better at using it and can pass on some useful tips.

The phantom 2 is awesome. There is also a Hubsan h109s x4 pro that is coming out (hopefully next month) with FPV for only 499.

Can't wait to see the next video in this series.  It's been way too cold to fly this puppy in Toronto since I received mine at Christmas!  Can't wait to see how you make out!

One of the best reviews I seen. I smell new things started from the apple box smell which is amazing. Lot better you went in to the unboxing not know what bits were.

Best use of this drone is Corridor Digital's Superman video. Really makes me want a drone now.

Jared just one thing that's been on my mind. When recording your videos, since they're not shot RAW obviously, when shooting them what mode to you shoot in? Standard, Neutral, Vivid, etc...? Personally I choose neutral as the blacks aren't so deep so it leaves you more detail. Just curious.

So when can we expect a sample video? :)

If your focus is video then the Phantom 2, non Vision version is a better solution due to the better 2 axis gimbal.  The Vision is more targeted at photos.

There's not much point in having a 64GB card as you could record for the whole flight on the highest resolution and not even come close to filling up the card before the battery on the Phantom runs out.

I would love to be this guy's roommate.

I wish these companies would do a range of gas powered copters instead.
A good gas powered one will get 1-4 hours depending on the fuel tank, and will hold much more weight. (Some race tracks will have them, and they can usually carry a decent sized camera and transmitter in addition to a decent sized lens)

From the comparison Ive seen the Vision footage is slightly better than the Go Pro.

would be cool to use one of these when you make videos outside

Use a TPLINK wifi repeater worth $45 and you will be about 900 meters range from the live video feed from 300 meters using the supplied DJI wifi booster

Watch that sniff test around those propellers!

I guarantee Go pro doesn't buy a Chinese company like DJI. Too expensive and risky to do business over there. If anything they will design there own drone or buy another countries version.

They're gonna Spinny McSpinnerson

The different vloggers I've seen flying this thing have all said the same thing.

Practice on one of those cheaper RC quad copters before trying to fly this thing. Better to lose 40 or 50 bucks, than a thousand on your first try.
