In this video, we are counting down the top 10 facts about the Poodle that you might not know.

A Quick Overview:
Group: Companion Dogs
Weight: 45 to 70 pounds
Height: From 1 foot, 10 inches tall at the shoulder
Life Expectancy: 10-15 years

Although today's Poodles seem to epitomize a life of leisure and luxury, make no mistake: These are real dogs bred to do real jobs. Although it hardly seems possible when you look at a primped-up Poodle in the show ring, the breed was originally a water retriever, a job that requires jumping in the water to fetch waterfowl for hunters.

In fact, the English name poodle is derived from the German word pudel, or pudelin, which means to splash in the water. And in France, Poodles are called Caniche, a name derived from chien canard, meaning duck dog. Even the elaborate coat styling that the breed's known for once had a practical purpose: trimmed areas lightened the weight of the dog's coat and wouldn't snag on underwater debris, while long hair around the joints and vital organs protected the dog from the cold water.

There are three sizes of Poodle, all considered part of the same breed: going from smallest to largest, these are the Toy, the Miniature, and the Standard. The Standard is probably the oldest of the three varieties, and some still carry on the Poodle tradition of working as a water retriever. No matter the size, Poodles are renowned for a playful but dignified personality and keen intelligence. When it comes to training, this is an "A" student, and the Poodle excels at performance sports such as obedience, agility, and hunt tests.

Despite his regal air, the Poodle is no snob. These are people-friendly dogs who want to stay close to their families — they get lonely when left by themselves for long periods — and are always up for a good game.

I have had 3 poodles. Buffy Brown Ear lived to be 13, my sweet little girl. I miss her and cry for her even after 41 years. Buffy was white, and 1/4 in too tall to be a toy. Smart as could be and learned tricks all through her life. I miss her so. 9 years ago I was gifted 2 male poodle puppies, one white, one black with silver socks, I named them Shylock and Braveheart. Shy was the most faithful dog ever and when I was unexpectedly hospitalized for over two weeks, he starved himself to deadth because I was not there. I cry for my Shylock, all 4 pounds of him. I still have Braveheart, the smartest little boy. He has a beautiful thick body of hair that I trim myself. He is a "talker" and responds to "conversation". If I had a huge yard, or a farm I would have a standard poodle because poodles are the best. When in a small boat running a trotline Braveheart could not stand that I was so far out in the water and the next thing I knew my year old pup was swimming for all he was worth, his fuzzy hair on top of the water. Love, love, love a poodle. I have had the pleasure of knowing some fine dogs, black and tan hounds, American Staffordshire Terrier, Rat Terrier, and Drahthaar. Dogs are amazing. I would like to try a Maine Coon Cat before I die, but at 72 one would probably out live me.

I love my poodles. So sweet, smart, and fun! With so many doodle mixes today (which I think in my neighborhood it’s the law to have a doodle) I’m glad to see that poodles are still loved and appreciated for the amazing dogs they are!

My family has only had miniature poodles. Our first one was really smart -- maybe too smart for her own good. She was very sociable with the other dogs (and even one cat) in our neighborhood. One day I got home from school, and she had invited ALL her friends into the house for a 'party'. She lay in the center of my parent's bed, and all her friends (assorted neighborhood dogs, mostly also poodles) were lazing on the floor and the bed surrounding her. She had figured out how to open our back door and they were all just chilling out.

BTW, that same dog was actually afraid of water. When she was a puppy, we brought her to the beach once. She tried to run to my dad, who was in the water, and then a small wave hit her, and she never went near the water again.

She had a daughter that we also kept, who was the runt of the litter. When the daughter had puppies, she had something called 'milk sickness'. We were told by the vet that we should not let her nurse the pups. The Grandma would jump into the box with the puppies, and would growl at the mother to keep her away. The puppies started to nurse on the grandma, who eventually began to give milk, and thus took over nursing duties.

I used to dog sit for my mom's poodle. Whenever I had to drive her somewhere (like the vet when some wound that was stitched up became infected), the dog insisted on wrapping herself around my neck while I drove, kind of like a scarf. It was weird. That was the only way she would sit still in the car and not get crazy nervous.

I wish I could have a dog where I live now, but I have to settle for visiting my brother and his two poodles.

I cannot wait to get my poodle. He's mainly going to be a service dog, but I hope to have fun in the pool with him from time to time.
