Don’t forget to tell them to put it on a surge protector.

I would usually agree but Xfinity gave me 24 months free for the xfi gateway and if I used my own modem/router it was gonna be an extra $30/m for unlimited data

The thing is. I work as a technician. And the positive thing of rental is “you can change it everytime for a new one, and it is modem and router and land line service 3 in 1”

True...
People are still paying the "technician" to set up the internet at their house.

If you buy a router, as new tech comes up, you get to replace it. Not to mention, if it goes bad out of warranty, you get to buy a new one. WIFI tech changes pretty often. So, you have your slow wifi forever..

This is absolutely true. Also their new models are throttling you faster. Go ahead download a small app and tell us how long it takes. Good luck with your gig speeds. Get rid of that leased modem asap!

Not true in my experience. There are many things about Comcast/Xfinity I can complain about. But this is not one. I did what you suggested only to see my Internet speeds drastically drop. I switch back to the Comcast modem and it outperformed the modem and router I purchased separately. They are going back. Keeping my Comcast modem/router combo.

Yeah man. Scamcast rents you a modem and also is a hotspot for other people outside your home. So, you pay for the electricity of that modem/hotspot for other scamcast users on the street. Then your home is on their hotspot map location. It doesn’t give your address but with the location anybody can figure it out. Also, I am assuming that the scamcast modem/hotspot internet speed gets affected because other people may be using it as a hotspot.

What these companies need to do is find a way stop charging.

Wifi or internet has to be free everywhere, anywhere, whenever you'd like to use it.

Money ain't gone be around forever.
We gotta get rid of it.

The modems are top of the line and perform very well. You can buy your own one unless you have a landline service bundle. They do make all in one modems you can buy instead of buying a standalone modem and a separate WiFi router. But after 5 years you may have to upgrade your devices and buy new ones again. As technology gets better and speed tiers increase, the modems evolve.

Most modems and routers can be bought as a single unit so its very reasonable to spend 100$ for a decent setup. I haven’t used their BS in awhile but the router modem combo they gave me would randomly shut off and it was consistent with replacements. Just buy a better one for a cheaper price

That used to be true. But the way they price their plans now, It’s a better deal to just rent it because it’s part of their monthly package and they can send you their new upgraded version every two years with no contract. The pricing is good for 24 months. Then after that the instant your bill goes up just give them a call and they will give you a new promo and new modem.

the new xFi routers aren't that bad actually. Also, for those who are less technologically inclined, the router/modem settings being integrated into the app is actually pretty dope. If you're internet company doesn't provide that, then yea, I'd say get your own stand alone router/modem tbh.

I work for comcast xfinity, and having your own modem only saves you money if you dont use unlimited because it wil lcost you more for unlimited and your wn than to rent and get unlimited, also a majority of the time we have deals that make the modem free for the contract.

Um my mom told comcast that her old Xfinity box didn’t work they gave her the latest one for free💀

Internet speeds increase sometimes TWICE a year, so whatever modem you purchase out of your own pocket is going to be stuck with a performance ceiling.

If you called yourself saving money and bought a new DOCSIS 3.0 modem 5 years ago, it is now out of date... and pretty soon the DOCSIS 3.1 modem you buy to replace it will also be outdated.

Just pay the rental fee.

If you use your own modem/router they charge you an extra 30 bucks a month for unlimited data. Which surprise surprise, comes free with the 15 dollar rental fee for their Xfinity equipment. I went over the data cap with my own modem and router and got charged an extra hundred bucks!! Beware. I threw up the white flag and got their 15 dollar equipment.

My wifi is full bar I'm happy with Xfinity I mean its the fastest internet I could possibly get but I'm still happy with it even if there's some flaws

The problem is that one day "said router" may no longer be compatible and you'll pay for a new router anyways. If the Xfi Gateway is older model, you can swap for a newer one at no additional charge. You're paying for convenience.

If you're going for a wired connection, then that's a completely different avenue altogether and MUCH more expensive

your also data capped with your own router, dont have the same security and monitoring. also if a technician is needed to fix wifi issues and it turns out that it has been reciving way to high off DSRX he will tell you need to buy a new modem its fried. if you get a rented route tech's have them in their truck andd are infinitely replace able. speaking as a fieldd tech myself see this problem everyday people having to replace a 200 dollar cable modem or router way to much
