Mercury is poured into a U-tube as shown in Figure (a). The left arm of the tube has cross-sectional area A1 of 10.0 cm2, and the right arm has a cross-sectional area A2 of 5.00 cm2. One hundred grams of water are then poured into the right arm as shown Figure (b). (a) Determine the length of the water column in the right arm of the U-tube. (b) Given that the density of mercury is 13.6 g/cm3, what distance h does the mercury rise in the left arm?

I like how you explained all the principles in a simple manner as well as doing the solution step by step. Kudos to you!

Thank you so much for this! I don't usually bother to comment but your explanation really helped a lot and made me more confident about my finals.

at 4:03 you say that h2 is 2 times the height of the water column but you mean two times the height "h" from which the mercury rises on the left! Otherwise you helped me find the missing piece in my calculation, thx!

you have two h's in the problem, the one that's in the problem and the one you labeled for the water column. I was confused for a fraction of a second.

The statement at 3:58 re: h2=2h .... the video says the h2 is twice the height of the water column but I'm having a hard time seeing how that is true. How does that expression not indicate that h2 is twice the height of the mercury on the L above the dotted line?

I have a question, why is the volume of the raised mercury is equal only to the part h2 not to the whole column of water which is represented by h??

why doesnt the area affect the height of the columns

Be more carefull with the symboles you use to represent the heights, watching this without sound is really confusing

I got 95.23 cm as my answer for part a (different numbers) which was correct. but part b I follow your formula and its not correct. How could this be?
