I love how Atreus casually hears about how his dad brought down an entire pantheon and got nothing to say about it lol

The stories are honestly the best part of the GoW games. Normally, when you're moving from place to place in a game, it's a bit of a drag, but I ended up taking deliberate detours and taking longer than I needed to so I could hear the full stories every trip.

One thing I love about Kratos in Ragnarok is he and Mimir are the ONLY people in the entire game not actively trying to prevent a prophecy nor enact one. They have enough life-experience to know that meddling with prophecies just doesn't work.

Odin and Atreus are actively trying to stop a prophecy from happening, Ragnarok. Freya is actively trying to start Ragnarok and get the prophecy moving and is trying to convince Kratos in joining her.

Kratos knows he's prophesied to die and he's not actively trying to stop his death, instead he's trying to prepare Atreus for life without him so that Atreus can survive. He fights to live because he has a reason to but he accepts that his death is likely imminent and leaves it be. He's not trying to get out of the prophecy, nor is he trying to change it.

He and Mimir try to teach Atreus not to take prophecy seriously, but Atreus just can't do that because, like so many others, he's so emotionally attached that he can't bear the thought of the prophecy coming to pass.

Atreus ultimately ends up having to learn that he and Kratos can change, and accepts that Kratos doesn't do stuff because he's prophesied to but because it's what he needs to do.

Kratos "and take his office"
Mimir "the hell's an office?"

“One often meets his destiny on the road he takes to avoid it”
The very act of trying to evade a prophecy is what makes sure the prophecy comes to pass

I think that experience Kratos had with breaking his bond with Ares and killing him is my favorite.

That's the problem and surrealism about prophecies. They're often vague that even if you prevent it the outcome ends the same anyway. God of War did so well with this theme. Like when Atreus mistook Týr in the lead to Ragnarök. In reality, it wasn't Týr but the name above the leader said "striþguð" which means "god of war" and he was holding a spear and Gjallarhorn. And guess who was the god of war with a spear and Gjallarhorn at the climax? Santa Monica really nailed it.

Kratos: She also didn’t wear a shirt and just left her chest exposed.

It's telling that Ares is the only Greek god Kratos _doesn't_ regret killing.

I do like how Kratos' character change is very slow and almost unnoticable unless you play the whole story. I feel some times character changes are sudden and obvious. Kratos' is very real feeling in that it's slow, gradual, and taking alot of effort.

If Kratos were as fine a story teller as Mimir, he could regale people with tales of his adventures all day. But I think it would be a depressing experience -- hardly any of them ended happily.

It’s interesting, because this dialogue is different depending on whether you’re with Freya and searching for the Nornir. Because I never heard this version of the dialogue before. It’s actually interesting to be honest.

Yep, just like the Giants.

Rule 1 of Greek Prophecies: Don't try to stop them.

I love how much dialogue is hidden in this game if you just explore enough

this dialogue is so great because its a paralel to the prophecy that the god of war (at this point tought to be Týr) would lead the army against asgard in the ragnarok, when in reality, by taking Týr of the table, odin opened the gates for kratos to fullfill that role

“Brought the very future they wanted to avoid” summarizes like, 80% of greek mythos 😂

As someone who played the originals as they came out, it hits different when Kratos retells events of the past to the characters in Ragnarok, and their utter disbelief at the sheer audicty of past-Kratos and the insanity of his world - meanwhile I'm just here like, "Oh. Yeah. Yup. I remember that. Mmhm."

Really the Oracle didn't bring about the future she wanted to avoid, she just had no way of avoiding it in the first place. If she didn't help Kratos, and therefore he didn't beat Ares, then Ares and the Furies would've destroyed Olympus regardless. Since she did, Kratos took his seat and destroyed Olympus instead. Either way lead to the same conclusion
