I’m glad you addressed this. Many of the stances, strikes and blocks seen in kobudo are similar to the ones in Karate.

Agreed - "Kobudo and Karate are two wheels of the same cart". So true! I am fortunate that the style I was trained in, Okinawa Kenpo, had kobudo built into our system. It's a great way to build strength and flexibility in your forearms and grip too! Plus, it's fun!

This is so great Jesse! Thank you so much for this. I started learning kobudo with my old instructor, and when he retired it wasn't taught anymore. But now I can continue 😁

That is so cool Jesse. We just learned some of short staff. Do not tell my wife but a light fixture is now permanently bent in an upstairs room, lol. Every martial artist should learn the stick. My wrists are more flexible and strength increase in my hands, wrists and shoulders. A solid heavy staff is great for conditioning not to mention as a disabled Veteran I can take a cane on a plane🤔🤔🤔

Thank you Sensei. I was gifted a handmade set of Tonfa awhile back and have been wanting to start learning how to use them, but it would require investing into another whole dojo and I just don't have the time right now. This will be an amazing start for me! Our system does teach some basic bo and sai, but I'm sure I'll jump into those next to go deeper!

I am really not a fan of Martial Arts online courses and i have checked a lot the last years.

But this Kobudo Course looks quite interesting and fun.

Thanks Jesse!

Mr. Enkamp, I think it's fantastic how much effort you really take to improve your karate's functionality! I noticed that, as part of your constant research, you seek out other styles to fill whatever gaps you see. Since you're a kobudo instructor, may I suggest you try a collaboration with a kendoka? Kendo also puts emphasis on the mid-to long range game, like certain styles of karate (eg. Shotokan), with darting motions and quick management of range.

If you ever get interested, there's actually a good opportunity for you to seek a kendoka out! There's a Korean Youtube channel called Hogucouple, and the founders of the channel have a similar goal as you - they want to modernize their kendo, just as you do with your karate. They're constantly seeking other martial arts to learn from and spar against, and they've already encountered many different styles on their channel, including Western Boxing, Muay Thai, BJJ, Judo, Taekkyeon, Taekwondo, HEMA longsword (Lichtenauer branch), Épée Fencing, and Kali / Arnis / Eskrima. They haven't done karate yet, and it'd be the perfect chance for you to try it out! If you ever need a Korean translator, I can fill the role, haha (shameless self-promotion).

Anyways, good luck, and thanks for all the amazing content!

Honestly it looks so cool. My favorite kobudo weapons are yari, kama, rokushaku bo, jo, and tonfa. Weapons that are designed for close quarter but to a perspective of ninjutsu- a tools of infiltration. Also, these weapons are also served in justice of Japan, one of them is tonfa.

Thank you Sensei Enkamp! There aren't enough kobudo resources in a lot of places - including mine - so this is exactly what I'm after.

I'd LOVE to see kobudo have more attention. Really looking forward to your course.
The reason I've dropped practicing Karate after getting black belt was that It felt too "sporty". And I didn't have the time to practice it as a serious sport.

Weapons training is so integral to martial arts and provides context for may unarmed techniques. Have you done any training with a Kanabo? Links in nicely with the mace and Jo.

Have you checked out the weapons in the Muyedobotongji? It's a Korean manuscript from 1790 that takes from previous manuscripts that came as a development of Chinese instructors. What's interesting about this is that it is pre-Sino-French war which is the likely timeline for the introduction of Savate to the region.

Great looking site Jesse
The Bo techniques are very much the same as Aikido. Would like to know your views on their relationship
