My wife is on the road before the oil even thinks about moving

I suggest waiting until the vehicle goes into closed loop and idles down before driving. Fast idle on cold start is plenty to get the oil circulating through the engine. Also allow a bit of heat to transfer through to the transmission a bit. I’ve noticed most modern cars stay in open loop longer and also don’t like to go very well if trying to drive immediately.

The correct amount of time in the winter is when the windshield is defrosted, so you can see where you're going.

In my opinion, you must wait until the engine idel is back down to normal

My cars all have a "cold start" procedure in which it idles at ~1200 RPM for the first ~30 seconds or so. I just wait for the RPM to drop below 1000 and then start driving.

My motorcycle specifically says to wait 15-30 seconds to "build oil pressure" before taking off, so I follow those instructions too.

Been warming vehicles up for 25 years. Never had a major mechanical failure. With all due respect to mechanic Bob, I’ll keep doing what works.

I wait until the thermostat the owner's porch light turns on 😂

I wait until the high idle has come down. Usually 15 20 seconds after start up.

Warming up your car means allowing the oil to reach engine parts that are furthest away from oil pan like valves and rockers, which usually takes 15 to 30 seconds. You just want to let the car run long enough so the oil reaches the top of the engine

In the winter time, I wait until I don't hear the lifters chatter. This means the oil is getting to where it's supposed to be. I also don't push the engine until it does hit operating temps.

try that in Alberta at -50. Even synthetic oil is like sledge when it gets that cold. I warm it up for at least 5 minutes as I have seen parts of engines get starved for oil because of extreme cold. I should also mention I am a licensed Heavy Equipment Mechanic.

The best answer is this. It doesn't hurt to warm up your car or truck, but taking off with it cold can cost thousands of dollars.

My heater gotta get warm first. Defrost them windows. It gets so cold here and you can't even handle the steering wheel (-54f was the coldest this year) If it's that cold don't bother starting unless you've got a block heater. I learned the hard way and now looking at a new engine. That oil doesn't move when it's that cold. So you can imagine the damage on such a cold start

Different Metals Aluminum, steel, brass, copper, stainless, pot metal, etc etc expand at different rates. Expediting the process eventually ends up in blown gaskets and seals. More commonly in turbos and aluminum cylinder heads on iron blocks.

(FROM EXPERIENCE AS A OWNER AND MECHANIC) A gasoline fueled vehicle, how ever long you feel. Diesel fueled vehicle, warmer than 40 degrees out, when ever, if it is lower than 40 then wait a bit unless you plug it in. Gasoline powered vehicles don't need to "warm" up because the fuel vaporizes well below 0 (-40 to be exact) and uses thin oil so it flows nicely threw the engine. Diesel vaporizes at about 100 degrees, so it needs to be warmer. The oil is also thicker and needs to warm up to flow better. Hope that helps!

I wait til the idle comes down a bit, which is about 15 sec. I assume there's a reason the idle starts high then comes down, so I roll with it. Unless I'm scraping ice off, then I finish that first.

Warming it up before driving it is the point lol. It's called preventative maintenance. Like rolling out of bed and running to the restroom, might trip slip fall etc, because you just woke up. No you rub your eyes and walk or shuffle that way.
