Dumbledore was right: love is the downfall of Voldermort. But it wasn't just Harry's parents love, his love for his friends, or even others love for him. But Snape's love for Lily.

In the order of the Phoenix, Sirius made the statement that you didn't leave the death eaters, it was a lifetime of service or death. Plus, Snape decided to become a double agent working for Dumbledore.

We don't see much of the characters during the first wizarding war. So it's hard to know for sure what the characters mindsets actually were. I think Snape was like any kid who gets caught up in a gang, because they want protection, and they want to feel powerful. But once they realize the cost involved, they want out. Bellatrix does say something about Snape always avoiding the fighting in the halfblood prince. I think Snape wanted out, but it was only when Lily's life was endangered that he did not care about the consequence of betraying Voldemort.

I do think Snape was happy, respected and looked up to for his cleverness and talent in the deatheaters. He had none of those things anywhere else. He was also included and important in the deatheaters. Why would he want to leave?

I agree with you on why Severus switched sides. I wonder how much he really had the capacity to love, though. If I truly loved someone, I would try to protect their child as well. I most certainly wouldn’t have bullied their child as he did Harry. Severus is a very complicated person.

You forgot his home life. Snape was neglected and physically abused at home by his muggle father/witch mother. Then he gets to Hogwarts is separated from Lily and while he's being relentlessly bullied by the Marauders, he was welcomed into Slytherin by Lucius Malfoy and the other Death Eater Wannabes, Mulciber and Avery for instance. He also was born and raised into poverty so that also plays a big part in his future with the Death Eaters. And who knows what the children of Death Eaters told him about Voldemort and Death Eaters.

My own thoughts on why Snape treated the students the way he did: if he's going to truly be a double agent for Dumbledore and have Voldemort's trust when he returns, he needs to make it convincing. That's just not happening if he treats the students any other way. If there's no favoritism toward Slytherin, no disdain for muggleborns, etc, do you think he is welcomed back by Voldemort?

You are right about him switching sides just when it came to Lily. And yes it's dark not to care for the father and son. But I disagree that he didn't want to leave, he had a change of heart once he realized Voldemort killed the love of his life. It doesn't matter if it happened late, better late than never. Snape played a major role in Voldemort's downfall, and he did this because he wanted to. Probably he felt the need to have revenge for Lily, that is why he left the DE. But the point is he should be viewed as a hero, that is the way I will always view my favorite character in the HP universe.

I almost always agree with your opinion in your videos. I for one am very glad you are still making Harry Potter themed videos. When you make a video about the state of the channel, or other informational videos about yourself, you project a very kind vibe. I have enjoyed your videos ever since I forst watched one. You are one of the youtube creators that have me excited when a new video comes out. I liked the vampire videos also.

Well he did go to Dumbledore after he found out Voldemort was on the warpath before the actual murders

Snape is such a well thought out and well written character. 🖤

He joined the Death Eaters for the same reason he remained loyal to Lucius Malfoy. He was bullied and shunned and they made him feel important and protected. In fact, you could almost blame James and Sirius for it. They tormented him and he drifted right into the arms of the worst people.

Let us be abundantly clear about this.
When Severus Snape went to Hogwarts, his best, indeed his only friend was a Muggle Born, whom he comforted that her magic, while unusual, didn't make her the "freak" her only sibling repeatedly called her.
From their first meeting on the Hogwarts Express, the arrogant, spoilt, bully, James Potter began attacking young Severus. Bully Potter was soon joined in making Severus's life as miserable as possible by three others, Remus Lupin, Peter Pettigrew and especially Sirius Black (because Bullies always need Allies). These four pieces of Human Garbage made it their life's purpose to torture the natural loner Severus, simply because he was different. They tortured him physically, emotionally and psychologically. They often did this in Public. And the only response from ALL the other students was laughter. His "Best Friend" even joined in the laughter.
Again, I repeat, he was a natural loner. Moreover, not only was he repeatedly and publicly abused by his fellow students, there's clear evidence that both he and his mother were abused by his Muggle father.
Where else could he turn for friendship and support than to his fellow Slytherins? Dumbledore, who despite knowing that James Potter was an incorrigible bully, made him Head Boy?
Severus was alone with no support. So he turned, blindly, to the only ones available, his Housemates. That they were all wannabe Death Eaters was a distant second to the reality that they did not abuse him (It's possible that prefect Lucius Malfoy welcoming him to Slytherin was the first time he ever felt accepted).
Severus was an unusual Death Eater. He wasn't a Pure Blood (unlike the Bullying Marauders) or most of the rest of the Death Eaters (at least by their own telling). In fact, the nickname he chose for himself emphasized his (in Death Eater thinking) inferior Blood Status.
And even decades later, Severus still lived in his Muggle father's home (a place even Muggles felt was very low class).
And, no matter how many times we see Severus Snape, we never see him persecuting Muggles or Muggle Borns (other than HP (because of his resemblance to the person who tried to destroy Severus) the student who seems to suffer the worst from the perfectionistic Potions Master is the Pure Blood Neville Longbottom because of his abysmal ability at Potions - and we've all encountered teachers who treated us badly because of our poor performance in their subject).
So to sum up - Severus Snape, the survivor of Parental abuse from a Muggle and the victim of repeated abuse from Pure Blood Bullies, turned to the only people who offered him acceptance. They happened to be Death Eaters. So why would he WANT to leave them?!

Let's be real, had Harry not been the chosen one, Snape would still be a death eater.

He died as he lived, not being able to let go of Lily.

I love reading everyone's comments. I wish there was a normal every day forum where people could gather and chat like this. Sort of like a book club but for movies too. I feel like there are so many cool communities of likeminded people who love the same things like the Potterverse but only get to chat in youtube comments or reddit.
