It's a race against the clock in the search and rescue operation to locate any signs of a missing 21-foot submersible and the five people on board who were attempting to tour the Titanic wreckage. “Our entire focus is on the wellbeing of the crew and every step possible is being taken to bring the five crew members back safely,” OceanGate said in a statement. NBC’s Tom Costello reports for TODAY.

I'm gonna take this as a sign that we shouldn't be touring dangerous grave sites for the sole purpose of recreation.

At 12, 000 feet, the water pressure is about 6000 PSI, or 450 atmospheres.
Regular air pressure is 14 PSI, a car tire is 32 PSI, a bike tire is 90 PSI, a spray paint can is 110 PSI, and a top of the line scuba tank is 3000 PSI.
If there was a leak of any kind, no matter how small, those folks are gone.

For the quite reasonable sum of $250, 000 these people have gained the privilege of becoming honorary members of Titanic's hallowed dead.

The dad and son being in there together is so sad. This is literally my worst nightmare. In the best way, I almost hope it was an implosion instead of just being stuck and slowly suffocating.

Why people need to risk life and death to see the Titanic is beyond me.

Leave the Titanic alone - that is the resting place of so many people and it's disrespectful to disturb them... this shows that it's not meant to be a tourist attraction. If you're fascinated, watch a documentary!

I wouldn't have gone for free! Hard to imagine why these privileged individuals would overlook such danger.

Why on earth pay that much money to travel down to a place thats been filmed over and over and you can watch for free on youtube? Forget how DANGEROUS it is. Spending that kind of money is offensive when there's places in the world where people are starving.

I’m claustrophobic so I would never do anything like that😬

That sub may never be found, and such manned subs may stop at this point after this. Plus search down there by unmanned means, just for recovery efforts, will be expensive. And a needle in a haystack prospect.

Yeah, God just loves it when you put it in His face that way.

5 people peeing & pooping in a submersible “minivan” at the bottom of the ocean sounds dreadful.

Well they got to experience what it would be like

Someone couldn't pay me 250K to go to that depth of the ocean. Much less I spend 250K to do it.
