Just thought I'd correct one point - I created and ran the Minecraft ModDB page with permission from Notch, and I personally asked, if Minecraft won the ModDB "Indie of the Year" awards, would he add cake? He said yes, and I co-ordinated the Quest for Cake campaign on ModDB. Naturally, it did win, and cake got added.

Thought I'd just elaborate on that a bit. Great video! Very interesting, I feel so old knowing nearly all of these :P

There's a parallel to this in Lego, Lego can't copyright their Lego bricks anymore, their functionality of clipping to other bricks is a natural phenomenon, only their Lego Figurine stays copyrighted.
So long as the game does not copy anything that can't be coded in any other way, or only very few way exist, so long do these parts of code not violate copyright.
