Canon EOS 60D Review

Amendment: You CAN see the level guage in the viewfinder of the 60D. Check the user manual for details. This is awesome for me!

...and something else I didn't mention. The 60D has very good internal RAW image processing. It lets you adjust all kinds of things like brightness, color...and even lets you reduce chromatic aberration with certain lenses! Very cool.

Here are some of my impressions of this fantastic piece of kit. Hope y'all find this useful. I compared it a lot to the 550D because I think people will find that a useful comparison, and it's where my experience lies.

The big lens you can see on the camera is the Canon f2.8 17-55mm.

Canon 60D: 17.9 megapixel APS-C sensor
9 point AF (f2.8 sensitive in the center)
ISO up to 12800
3.0" TFT articulated LCD screen (1,040,000 pixels (3:2))
Continuous shooting approx 5.3 fps
Memory format: SD card (also SDHC, SDXC)

Movie mode:
1080p (30, 25, 24 fps)
720p (60, 50 fps)
640 x 480, 640 x 480 crop mode (x6 magnification)
Microphone socket
Optional manual microphone volume setting

Any questions, drop me a comment. Subscribe for more photography stuff as I get on to it.

Get the Canon 60D :-)

@KangHM They can only be applied to pictures after you take them. You can do a tilt shift effect by filming with a tripod and blurring the top and bottom of the screen - you'll need something better than Windows Movie Maker for that!

@andreasstcrew Yes, they are the same video quality. If there is any tiny difference it would be imperceptible. The difference is in handling. The 7D handles better for stills photography. But the 60D handles seriously better for video because of the articulated screen and manual audio control

@mkaykay707 Yes - all digital SLRs have normal viewfinders as well as live view

@arcadia449 I just use Windows Movie Maker. It might be that your PC isn't powerful enough - what do you have? Try using a convertor to transfer your footage to 720p. I use Any DVD Converter, but you can find free converter software on the internet...

@Jonnyriffic You can only add the effect afterwards

@JanErikEdvartsen Yes, I'm afraid to say it has! After about 13, 000 shots for me. It also happened on my old 550D - seems to be a common problem

@Tennishead39 You're right, the D7000 is a better stills camera. Which is just as well - it's more expensive! But for filmmaking, there's no manual audio controls, articulated screen, or 60fps shooting (which is awesome - check my other videos). I'm serious about filmmaking, so I'd recommend the 60D - horses for courses.

I love how different your review was from the others I've been watching.
The information you gave was exactly the kind I was looking for. This makes me want the camera even more. Thanks so much. :]

@Smalskin It's definitely heavier but I like that...if you have a heavy lens then it can be a little hard work (I'm not very tough though!)

@wildchild124 I don't think it does, I'm afraid. You need a special remote control thingy.

@Redhawk14 Sorry dude, I don't know. Your best bet is to send a quick email to Canon - I don't use the attachable viewfinders

Christopher, excellent video review of the 60D. I've watched the DigitalRev one which criticized the buttons and some of the other ones that didn't touch on half of the differences you mentioned between the T2i/550D and the 60D; you covered all that. I also found you covered a lot of the non-technical aspects wonderfully that make owning a particular camera a joy or pain to shoot with. Please keep doing reviews, you are great at it.

@Zam919 @Zam919 It depends on your style, but AP makes me happy - and a lot of professionals use it. Aperture is the thing I'm most interested in controlling because it affects your depth of field, and picture quality (depending on your lens), and most of the time you want your aperture wide open anyway so you might as well fix it like that by using aperture priority. I think you won't be disappointed with your new camera :-)

you were totally in my head in the last 10 seconds of the video when you were doting on the 60D...i am right there with you...i come from a history of Canon Rebels and this was a fantastic upgrade for me too...i actually got my 550D (T2i) AFTER the 60D because i needed a 2nd shot video...great reviews as always!! thank you for sharing!

@JamilaMalluf Maybe try using a class 10 memory card?

Are you saying I should do my homework? Well, how about you? Where does Canon describe the 60D as being weather sealed? Canon describe the 7D as having weather sealing and environmental protection. Does it describe the 60D in the same way?

@floguiguiv That's ok. But just because a review is positive, that doesn't mean it's biased...
