As of this year (2024), the Canon EOS 60D is 14 years old. It's outdated. It's flawed. But it's also ideal for beginners. Here's Chuck explaining why this camera is perfect for newbies getting into photography.

Only 18 megapixels is hardly an issue for most photographers, too. This was my very first DSLR, and it made me fall in love with photography back when I got it in 2018.

Frankly, image quality probably peaked around 10 years ago anyhow, so the 60D should be very good enough for stills photography. The fact that it doesn't have crazy eye/subject autofocus tracking like most cameras have nowadays is a great thing for beginners. Its a powerful feature for pros and enthusiasts sure, but it spoils the beginner and amateur. It makes them shoot haphazardly knowing they will get something in focus but won't actually compose anything. It makes photography for them about just being in the moment rather than taking that moment and imbuing their perspective in it. Afterall, the greatest pictures in the world were taken on manual cameras.

I bought a 60D specificly because it was kinda retro. I had never regularly used a DSLR before (I'm 60+), but because I really live my 35mm EOS Elan 7ne, the 60D is remarkably similar. And all of my lenses fit the mounts of both cameras.

I'm using a 40D to learn with. I'm going to keep it and try to keep it going another 20 years. It's a great camera.
I'll get a newer one eventually, but not just yet

I never seen the breakdown of the focus points correlating with the rule of thirds. And you explained it pretty well. Learned something new today. Everyone always talks about the 70d as it was a legendary camera (popularized by Casey Neistat) was cool to see a review about the 60d.

And unlike the 70D, which in specs is a much better camera. The 70D used still costs a lot more, many 70D have a focus issue, where it can be in focus in the viewfinder (with dioptic correctly set up) and slightly out of focus in image captured. And if you have a working 70D, you don’t want to use it too much for video as if it gets a bit too warm, you will get the dreaded Error 80, then possibly a dead camera. So 60D has a lot of advantages.

buying super expensive camera and lenses, to edit the pictures in LR with black and white and grain, to make them look vintage. This is progress.
