As an IT Director, I would much rather see relevant certifications which are current than a BS in pretty much anything. I would also add having a home lab setup and being able to "talk shop" helps IMMENSELY. If you are starting from Zero the certificate is a step in the right direction.

I have a marketing Bachelor degree, however that didn't help me to land a job in the marketing field. Currently I'm studying digital marketing through coursera and I hope for the best.

I feel that people should get Google certificates in conjunction to a similar certification for example
Google IT Support with CompTIA A+,
Google Cybersecurity with CompTIA Sec+ or ISC2 SSCP,
Google Data Analytics with CompTIA Data+ or Tableau Data Analyst cert

I have been in the Customer Support field for 15 years. I hit a wall when it comes to IT support requirements for positions. Today is day one for me 💡 searching on if this will work for me. I am now sure I should have added this skill along time ago! Welp no better time than the present...

I earned the UX Design and the Digital Marketing certs and the UX Design cert DID help me land a job but the cert can only take you so far. For the UX Design cert, I still needed to keep current and continue to show different kinds of work in my portfolio.
You can’t just expect to earn the professional certification and call it a day. There’s still work to be done afterwards and continue to apply what you learned to different projects.

I am a Senior Mechanical Designer with 20 years of experience. I do contract work which allows me to work on designing different products every couple years or so. While this has been interesting to learn many different styles of Engineering, with every new assignment I think about what I could be doing instead. I desire to learn, and get creative. So I am trying to build tangeable training in other fields. UX/UI is someting that interests me.

I am glad to hear that I am not wasting my time with Coursera. Like you said, it won't guarantee me a job in another field, but I am taking steps in the right direction.

Thank you!!!

The main issue is that as CNBC in a recent job video said, we want to get experience but everywhere expects it so there is no place to start.

My biggest problem with these certificates is the misleading statement that you do not need ANY experience in the field you are getting the certificate in. And at about 3 1/2 minutes into this video, and again at about the 6:15 point, he is even stating the experience you most likely will need.

Here are my thoughts on this certificate program:

Something I am wondering about, and do not see on YouTube anywhere, is how the number of tech worker layoffs will affect this part of the industry. If you haven't read yet, as of today, January 26, 2024, there have already been 24, 000 tech worker layoffs. And it isn't about to slow down form what the companies themselves are saying, including Google.

How is getting one of these certificates going to land you any position right now? It was already more difficult than Google is telling everyone, as these certificates alone do not get most people an interview, never mind their foot in the door. The majority of people that only have one of these certificates, and no other certifications or a degree, are being told they need actual work experience for a real company, not just a portfolio of practice projects for the Google certificate.

So, we're back to what us "older workers" have heard when we first started looking for employment; you need experience to get the job, then we wold ask, "How do I get the experience if you don't hire me for the job?" The 'ol catch-22 all over again.

EVERY ONE wants students to pull experience out their a$$. These companies want the best candidates without having to train them. After spending THOUSANDS on a degree, apparently degrees aren’t good enough now. Now we need to turn around and spend even more on certifications. If I had known all this crap 3 years ago, I would have NEVER waisted my time trying to get a Tech degree now. Then to top it off, u may get layed off eventually. As far as I see, Tech is a complete joke.

I want to switch careers to IT and recently passed both A+ tests. I asked my current employer who I have worked for 16 years if I could volunteer in the IT dept in order to gain experience and I was told HR does not allow people to work for free. I said I will work minimum wage on the side of my current job and that was still a no. It is VERY difficult to just "gain experience" in order to get even an entry level job in IT. This path has quite depressing for me and I have no idea where to go next? Volunteer at non-profits...post on contract sites? I have no idea.

Great video - very insightful! I have a master's and have been on the job for a while. I appreciate the insight and thought these certificates would be a good way to stay relevant (and still pay bills and take care of the family).
