This time on Engine Masters presented by AMSOIL, David Freiburger, Steve Dulcich, and Steve Brule, go on the hunt for the best manifold to make big horsepower numbers on a big-inch, big-block Chevrolet. These aren’t manifolds for any boring, old 454 or even a 496. We’re talking 598 cubes of big-block, and we’re throwing four different single-plane, single 4bbl manifolds at it from Dart, Pro-Filer, Brodix, and Edelbrock to see how the difference in their runner walls and plenum shapes make or cost power.

My RFD Victor Pro heads were tested by Curtis RFD with Pro-Filer, Edelbrock, and Brodix intakes. They were tried as they came from the factory and Brodix, Pro-Filer, and then Edelbrock in that order is where they placed. Then they were port matched to my heads by RFD and the Pro-Filer was the best intake then Brodix with a very close 2nd then 3rd Edelbrock, and far last was Dart it was the worst intake out of all. I imagine on other builds others will say other wise. My combination is RFD 24 Victor Pro heads, 10.2 DH, 4.6 BS, .903 lifter, 55mm cam, .400 raised cam, 615 cid bbc, with a V30 128 Vortech supercharger, e85, 123mm wilson TB, Holley Dominator efi ecu stand alone, and a custom ground bullet supercharger cam.
The Dart intake is just like Dart heads, way over priced. AFR heads are better than Dart and have a better price.

the real prob with a single quad intake is the uneven runner length. Tune the quad to feed those 4 outer cylinders, and the inner 4 are pig fat rich. The super high rise intakes that push the carb waaaay up there, can theoretically get the runner lengths closer together than just slapping on a plenum spacer...and there's less of a bend of air/fuel traveling vertically out the bottom of the carb and then taking a turn to the bent V of the cylinder banks. The Brodix design is a bit like a single quad tunnel ram, if you had to make such a beast.

I’ve been looking for a tunnel ram for my 496. My BBC is equipped with Ron’s 4.1” 1800CFM alcohol direct inject. Brodix BB3 xtra heads. Comp Comp K11-692-8 cam shaft. PTC 5, 500 stall. Suggestion?
