Cal Newport has never had a social media account. But he still has friends, he still keeps up with the news and he even manages to sell the occasional book. Now, he’s trying to convince others to join him in his life of “digital minimalism,” one that reclaims humanity from a handful of autocratic tech companies. Newport, an author and computer science professor at Georgetown University, joined THINK to explain the political and psychological benefits of quitting social media.

It is amazing how much time we spend on rubbish, and how we always think we are missing out on something ! Lost in nothingness ! I agree with all these points !

Get a job where you can't access social media and you won't spend much time on it anymore and you will become much happier.

I tried "Digital Minimalism" with all social media platforms but still spirals out of control a bit like a chronic alcoholic they have to give up drinking entirely so I only use YouTube

My bad sleeping habits were directly related to social media and mobile game apps. You have to teach yourself how to spend more time focusing on things that don’t involve your phone.

I deleted the apps. That in itself helped me better my mental health

Really want to quit social media all together but that's where I get most of my clients. So that's tricky. But this is a very good video. Love it. Thank you so much

It's TIME? it's way past time where have you been? We deleted it all a half decade ago. It's not a "product" it's a nsa information gathering program.

I left Facebook 1 year ago after spending more time in Zuckerberg jail for confronting racists than I did communicating with friends. I've not missed it a bit.

1/2 way through his book Digital Minimalism such an eye opening and paradigm shifting book. Absolutely needed in our society today with us becoming more and more addicted to shallow always on stimulation instead of lifting up our heads and enjoying life and the world around us.

Deleted my social media three months ago, haven't gone back since, and don't plan too all the social media platforms are just so toxic, and have taught me nothing over the course of reading them . I only use Youtube, which I have learnt a lot more from, and it's a good tool for what I want to look at, not what 500 of my "friends" like, retweet, follow.

I tried this late last year in October. And went a few months without it. But then got snapchat back, then facebook, then Instagram. Thinking of deleting them again. Especially with all this stuff going on these days. Dont know what's true or fake, what to believe

This is very true. There is something that will impede your advancement as I told my own subscribers. Addiction to social media. Now social media can be a good thing for advertising your business, YT channel or the like. But having your entire existence based on it is not. First there is the unhealthy aspect of comparing yourself to other profiles which usually aren't nearly as stellar in real life as they are on the front page. Then there is the aspect where your validation is being sought from people you rarely talk to in real life--if ever. Not to mention the constant quest of follows and likes also drops minute amounts of dopamine in your system literally physically making you addicted to social media. Which leads to later anxiety increase and depression. But also--if you are spending all your time on your iPhone then you aren't advancing yourself. Think about how much more you could learn about stock trading if you cut social media 90% down? That's my end point. It should be a very small part of your life not the center of it. Hope that helps someone out there---Charles
