Following my reaction video to 'Designer Brands Keep You Poor', where I was quite critical of the original video, I received a request to make a video on how to actually stop or not let the designer brands keep or make you poor, as someone who actually loves and enjoys luxury goods. As a luxury lover it can be hard to balance the need to be sensible and manage our finances and the desire to love and buy all of the new releases from the designer brands. In this video I share with you how to not let the designer brands wreck your finances and keep you poor and steps you can take to limit your spending.

I don’t have any designer items even though I really do love some of your bags. I find I can enjoy things by proxy, especially with your channel in particular. You are so down to earth that I find I don’t need to actually have the item, I can thoroughly appreciate yours. One day I might buy something if it crops up, but there’s no sense of urgency.

Wishlists are important! Mine has changed and thank heavens I didn’t just buy.

The wishlist has really helped me! I have a luxury account that helps me budget!! I buy items that fit my life and bring me joy. I never have more than 5 items on the list at a time. Great video!

I do several things the curtail the spending (i buy what i can afford in once, not in payments; wishlists; shopping my closet to see what I am actually needing/missing) but the best thing I did was from January to May I went on a No-Buy for all clothing, shoes, jewelry, and accessories. It was very liberating because i realized what I actually was missing from my wardrobe and what I actually was using on a regular basis.

It may not be for everyone, but i;m considering doing it again next year because it was so eye opening.

I love this video so much!!! I personally take quite a bit of time to research and think about the bags and shoes I want the most. I look at the preloved market daily because sometimes I can find items that are practically in brand new condition for considerably less. I have purchased highly sought after, sold out items, on the preloved market and have paid more than what they would have been at the store. But, only for items I REALLY want and can't find anywhere else. I love the preloved market so much. I still buy from the actual stores, but I buy quite a bit from the preloved market. I think the key in managing how much we spend on luxury, is not buying on impulse. But, taking some time, consideration and research the items we are hoping to buy. In doing this, it also helps us to be smart financially, too.

I just feel that the luxury experience can be had by researching and finding those amazing artisanal bags by small workshops, probably in Italy or France, where you might have the chance to meet the maker, request personal modifications, choose the colours etc, all at a much lower cost than what are being sold by big houses. It would probably be a very exciting and fulfilling experience and far more personal.

Love the ‘shop your own closet’ comment as it is so easy to get caught up in buying that we forget what we have! I also regularly go through my closet and try on clothes because my body changes due to gym/working out so it’s nice to know what fits and what doesn’t to be able to sell on!

Really enjoy hearing you talk about financial strategies. I am def enjoying the switch in resale from a sellers market to a buyer market also. Stepping away from luxury social media is such great advice. It really makes all the difference, out of sight, out of mind.

Great video. I’ve actually taken a huge step back from YouTube. I started watching during the beginning of covid but eventually found it was making me want to buy, buy, buy. I had to really reduce my YouTube time.

The other aspect of 'shop your own closet' is to look into why you're not wearing certain bags?
It may be that you're missing one clothing item, like a jacket or pants or shoes that will pull the look together.
Sometimes you just need a scarf to lift the outfit. You can also have your clothes altered, change buttons, take an item in, to give it a new life.
Always check your colours and have a good base of neutrals to build on. The base colours must be complemetary to your own colouring or you will just feel 'off' in relation to a bag or item that doesn't fit. So that can make a decision easier to let go of an item.
It's about being a conscious consumer and not sleepwalking into a purchase. We get into a trance state and it's about our hopes and dreams, we need to be aware of it but not be hard on ourselves.
I stay off Instagram because it seems to elicit the trance in me, but we all have different triggers.
Overall if we have harsh judgements of ourselves, it's like dieting, the blow out or rebellion is bigger.
Finally learn how to care for your items and keep them in good shape. This is about valuing yourself as much as the things you own.

Making a wish list is so important. I remember years ago I wanted the trifecta in the Neverfull, Speedy and Alma. I bought the monogram NF, the others went off the wishlist. I never did buy the Alma and I bought one Speedy. My wishlist changes all the time. Watching your video about the LV Loop bag and the difficulty with the zipper made me change my mind about that bag. It would drive me crazy too. I have stopped watching a lot of influencers. Would you mind making videos everyday. 😂😂I can’t wait for your unboxing.

I am a vintage-a-holic, so I'm not tempted by the shiny or new. I am not adverse to luxury items but I insist on vintage. (I'm also a historiographer so I enjoy researching the items when they were new.) I've managed to buy a f-e-w luxury items...several Bally clutches for $12.00 each...one in really nice quality lambskin...and a 1994 LV St Jacques in Borneo Green Epi leather. I now have two Hermès silk scarves plus some lower-end designer scarves. I've also acquired some Bally and Ferragamo vintage shoes--in my size (I have a very long narrow foot that is hard to buy shoes for).

My favorite fragrance is the 1981 Gianni Versace for women...and it has been my favorite since 1981 when it was released.

On my wish list are vintage Chanel and Hermès bags...but my bills must be paid and I have to have the funds to pay for it all.

On the plus side, I work in art metal...specifically silver and copper...so I've made some pretty unique rings, bracelets, and other pieces for myself over the years.

Wow thank you for making this video. I am so glad I stumbled across your channel. I make my finances top priority but have been spending a bit on luxury too but it’s made me feel a bit guilty. I’s so nice to learn some new strategies from you. You give so many ideas for planning and spending guilt free.

Great video and tips Amelia! I find the wishlist also helps me when buying pre-loved items, sometimes you may have the impulse to purchase something at the 2nd hand market because it’s such a steal but in those situations I will still look at my wishlist to see if it’s an item I have been wanting/ targeting or a temporary distraction that caught my eye because it’s a steal😅 regardless how low the price pre-loved compared to retails can be, these are still big purchases so all these tips do make each purchase an informed decision👍
