It's almost like there's a whole industry built around selling precious gems/metals, and they figured this exact thing out a long time ago

Understanding mass vs weight is a crucially important detail

I used to write software used by oil companies to calibrate their meters. This involved lots of calculations that all took into account local gravity. It's a known issue and it varies more than just latitude - it's affected by variations in the thickness of the crust, altitude and many other factors. You would be amazed at the precision they use for things like this.

At roughly .4% difference in weight, the cost of transportation by itself would be a loss.

Actually this was discovered during the Alaska gold rush, They thought someone was stealing the gold between Alaskan mines and San Francisco.

This is absolutely ridiculous. Flerf’s could never afford to buy gold 🙄

Asking a question isn't a shame but asking a question and then end it with "it's ridiculous" while you have no clue how it all works is stupid.

This guy is not alone, and he and his ilk are why our democracy is at risk. The poorly educated used to at least accept the fact that they didn't know what they were talking about, but not any more.

Working for a manufacturer of weighing systems I can say the gravitation is part of the configuration of these scales.

Speaking of gold, this guy is an absolute gold mine of Flerf madness.
Glad to see you shining the light of truth on him.

It's actually a real life problem that is pretty easily solved by calibration or by using a bar scale with a defined counterweight.

That must be why gold is cheaper in Dubai than it is in New York. Unfortunately, when gold is measured on a balance scale against a standard, that compensates for different gravity. That kind of scale even reads mass accurately on the moon.

Ah, well. There goes my business plan for “Tom’s NORTH POLE Gold Buying & Aluminum Siding” company!
Curses!!

Imagine thinking you’ve figured out something that hundreds of thousands of people in the precious metals business haven’t🤦‍♂️
What’s worse, instead of looking like a jackass in front of everyone, he could’ve spent a couple minutes & simply searched out the answer. How does one become so sure of themselves, but in reality are so dumb? I just don’t understand. Did it not occur to him to find an answer instead of immediately thinking ‘science guy wrong’ because HE couldn’t figure it out? Does he think that NO ONE knows more about any subject than he does? How does a person get like this? Why would you want to be like this?
It’s really got me confused & depressed. I feel bad for this guy, even while I can’t stand him. It seems like these people never had a chance. I can’t imagine being dumb, yet thinking I’m smart & being too dumb to realize I’m not😞

If JD Vance and Kid Rock were one human. In so many ways.

A hundred pounds of gold is also worth ~ 3.8 million USD. So even if you did manage to make this work that's like 0.16% profit, excluding the fact you'd probably spend more than 6 grand just transporting the gold

At least he asked a genuinely valid question.

Actually, the guy's point (could you buy gold where there's less gravity, and sell it where there's more) is why gold and certain other things are measured by mass or even VOLUME rather than weight, because such valuable materials _would_ gain and lose noticeable amounts of value depending on your altitude

Also the cost of transporting the gold would probably make the whole endeavor not worth it.

Wait...by his logic, gold would then lose pretty much all value when ejected into space...
