10 Years Later, From Normal Backyard To Permaculture Garden (Unseen Footage)

10 years ago I started planting fruit trees and other fruiting perennials in my backyard garden. The goal at the time was to create a food forest garden that would be a mixture of both annual fruits and vegetables, and perennial fruits and vegetables. A permaculture garden is one that seeks to not only provide a good yield, but also aims to mimic nature and apply the patterns and examples from nature into the design of the garden. Gardening with permaculture principles in mind will ultimately lead to a bigger more sustainable yield for the current year, and years to come.

This is what our entire country should be doing, and teaching this in all schools, the fact that we have hunger is totally unnecessary when we have a planet waiting to provide us with abundance if we care for her she cares for us, you have an awesome channel! Thank you!!

Those photos from back in the day are like a little Treasure Trove and to see how far you guys have come is just absolutely amazing. The garden you and Tuck have created is beautiful

Your parents have to be proud of you, what you were able to achieve in less than ten year, truly I just enjoy your enthusiasm seeing you all ways happy and proud of your hard labor, I wish more people in this country would do the same things as you are doing.

Here I am also in Jersey looking at my yard, sad face:( I grew up in the Caribbean, Barbados and my grandad had the entire property planted with fruit, vegetables and herbs. He used the water from the kitchen sink to water most of it and made a complex aqueduct-like complex of stone streams to water the rest. It was beautiful and delicious. I do not have a lot of fruits or veggies at home but I do have a plot in our town's community garden that is flourishing. One day James I will do as you have done, no grass period! At home I have planted lots of native pollinators and have a blast watching the birds, the bees and the butterflies feed.

Your food forest is just insane. It seems to me that a lot of our generation has been brainwashed into expecting instant gratification and to discount long term accomplishments. It's good to see you promoting good vibes and values through gardening in a simple backyard that could be an any backyard in America. Keep up the good work!

I am 65, just retired from Maine to Alabama. I had my first garden this year. You think your first one was small…. my first one is only 6ft radius. Hopefully it will quadruple next year and I’m planting my first trees asap. Thanks to my daughter for showing me your food Forest. You sparked my interest and now I’m going to start my own food forest.

Really good seeing the old footage overlaid as a comparison. I wish I would've documented my yard better when it was just a grasshole. You can't beat that before-and-after effect. It's very uplifting to see how far things have come.

Few questions…

1. What is the size of your garden?
2. That’s a lot of tomatoes and cucumbers. What do you do with them all?

Great stuff and love watching you and Tuck. Our bassets are going to be part of our garden.

Tuck doesn’t feel like hiring a cat as an employee just yet!! I love the respect shown to the little boss. What a team!

Tuck cracks me up, eating a cucumber. He is adorable. I planted three cherry trees this year and it seems so far from "forest" but i have a vision. Thanks for the encouragement, energy and inpiration.

James, Chris from the Isle of Wight UK. I have been greatly inspired by your gardening prowess. My wife Jenny and I moved to the house and garden we are in now last year and with 250 feet of garden and me reaching 70 I needed some guidance. You have been my inspiration and mentor as I’ve adopted many of your ideas. The best being the use of wood chips as a base. I had to clear a mountain of thumb nail size stones which was apparently used as a labor saving idea by the last occupants. Now the food forest is starting to take shape and I Thank you from the bottom of my heart for sharing your wonderful ideas.

Absolutely gorgeous food forest. A lot of hard work I can tell but definitely worth it. Super Sweet 100s are my favorite cherry tomato, but will try Sungold next year

Love your garden, love your channel. I consider you my neighbor since I was born and raised in Philadelphia. I now live farther north in Pennsylvania and love growing food. My parents had apple, pear and peach trees, grapes and berries. In addition my dad created the most beautiful vegetable garden. I remember the ropes he braided with harvested garlic and onions. He would hang them on the rustic wood shed. I now have the pleasure of growing vegetables in the garden that my father worked foe 40 years before my son and I started. I love gardening and am so glade that so many people started growing their own food during the pandemic. One very good thing that came from it. I wish you all happy growing and love Tuck! ❤️

I have a huge garden and it's just grass. I hate looking at all the grass!!! So watching you and other youtube gardeners has inspired me to get rid of the grass and go full permaculture. Ive already bought a polytunnel, planted 2 apple trees, 3 blackcurrant bushes, loganberries, tayberries, raspberries, gooseberries, and all kinds of vegetables in my new raised beds!! I have the most beautiful spaghetti squash thriving and producing so much food!
