Goku really didn't need to go SSJ1 for the Ginyu Force though, that was just overkill.

I seem to recall Trunks also doing this briefly in the History of Trunks film, while training with Gohan. I'd like to think it's a sub-super saiyan state. Like the user is powering up to near super saiyan levels, but hasn't quite broken the barrier, so the gathered energy quickly dissipates. This seems to be true for every "use" of it throughout the series.

My personal headcannon is that you enter Super Saiyan without having that "push". Since in the Trunks special when he was learning to turn Super Saiyan with Gohan, you see his hair spike up and he gains a yellow aura but without the yellow hair. Same with Gohan learning Super Saiyan right before the "need and desire" speach from Goku.

Random thought but Gohan in Bojack Unbound sorta used this "form" when he was rushing to Piccolo's aid when he was fighting Bojack but one of his thugs got in the way to stop him and he even used it when he was fighting Bujin when the little guy used his psychic powers to throw giant hands of a clock to impale the little Saiyan. In both cases, Gohan powered up while in base form somehow using Super Saiyan aura. Was that just an artist decision or something?

I love this form. Base form color hair with Super Saiyan shape. I just wish it did more in the series, and it looks so great.

Also on a side note, I'm inclined to disagree on SSP supposedly not being an official form. Given the facts that it appeared in *official* media, *reappeared* in GT, *AND* got a DBH card made for it, the fact that it was initially an "animation blurb" doesn't still apply.

When Goku Was Fighting Captain Ginyu He Powered Up The Kaioken Enough To Make His Hair Spike It Looked Dope With The Red Aura

What I find interesting is that a somewhat similar idea can be seen in *Dragon Ball Super: Broly* in Vegeta's first fight with Broly.

When Broly starts to catch on to the flow of the fight and starts to put Vegeta on the ropes with his quick adaptation, Vegeta decides to turn Super Saiyan to overpower Broly. However, before Vegeta fully goes golden, he's enveloped in a golden outline and still gains some manner of increased power despite still having regular black hair.

It could just be to emphasize Vegeta's increasing power to lead into Super Saiyan, but knowing this now, it could also be a nod to this little animation goof as an official thing. Perhaps Saiyans who can turn Super Saiyan can briefly tap into that power in their base forms before fully transforming and use it, thus giving them a golden aura but no hair colour change.
