Goldfish Tank Size - How big does your tank need to be?

In this video I talk about why having a rule of thumb about tank size is dumb. Tank size depends on so many factors that there is no rule of thumb in determining how big your tank should be. Every case needs to be looked at as an individual system with different conditions.

I just got into the hobby and knew nothing about it . So the fish keeper sold me 5 goldfish and a 10 gallon tank.( they are absolutely tiny and have a lot space to swim as of now ) and when I started doing research afterwards ( I know, stupid) I freaked out and I can't upgrade my tank for a couple of months. So I put 2 filters, aerators, 30% water changes every 2/3 days, and tested for ammonia and nitrates frequently . And my tank looks great. And my fish were happy. This video was a sigh of relief that what I was thinking was right. This video is important

I'm a scientist and your advice here really makes sense. It is the best guidance I have seen in many, many Youtube videos on goldfish care. Basically, you are telling people they need to test the water perhaps weekly for all the parameters you have mentioned, and water changes are mainly driven by nitrate concentration.

Thank you for this and I agree. Getting ready to renovate a 150 gallon and have my first Goldfish tank after being a Cyclid keeper for many years, and I appreciate your videos sir.

This is literally the best video on this topic I have seen so far. Everything is so well explained. Great channel with a great content!

My "rule of thumb" is about 10 gallons per goldfish, but use double the filtration recommended. I only do a 50% water change about once every 4 to 6 weeks. In my 75 gallon tank I have 7 goldfish and 2 aquaclear 70's for filtration. I have had this setup for decades and my fish live for a very long time and grow to a substantial size very quickly. Bottom line, the rule of thumb is, do what works for YOU.

Wow! Thanks Luke. This was really helpful. I'm pretty new at this but I keep my tanks minimal stock and very clean. I wanted more than one goldfish and you're right - I've heard I need basically a 100 gallon monster for 2 goldfish! Quality water and quantity both important. 2 Black moors in a 50 - kept up well should be good with my set ups. Thanks again man - really helpful!!!

Can you do a video about common misconceptions about goldfish? Or fun facts about goldfish?

I work at Petco as an aquatic specialist. When people wanna buy a comet goldfish it is really funny. I say that there is good news and bad news: You're buying a 25 cent gold fish but you have to spend over a 100 bucks on the setup.

Thanks for the clarifications. I have 5 goldfish & a pleco in a 40gal tank but after seeing all the videos on YT, I though I would need to re-home them and keep only 3. There is plenty of swimming space, so I guess upgrading the filtration & adding aquaponics should keep the water parameters in check and they should be fine for a few years until they get too big.

🔥❤️‍🔥 I've been having 5 comet goldfish in a 30 gallon octagon aquarium for over 2 years and they are doing perfectly fine. Just got a 55 gallon for them.❤️‍🔥🔥

Me listening to this as an English person desperately translating gallons to litres every time you say something 😣😂
So pleased I found your channel… my 5 year old won/saved a goldfish from a fair yesterday… I didn’t realise they needed such big tanks… I really feel for all the ones in such small tanks, I thought 40 litres would be big enough… he’s only about an inch long at the moment though… looking for a bigger one online now.
Thanks for your channel 💛

I’ve learned more about goldfish through my own research and joining Facebook groups. I only look through the files of the Facebook groups and RARELY ask questions on them. Any questions I have I go straight to forums on specific websites instead.

I really appreciate this video a lot because some of the info given to these new goldfish owners terrify them and scare them entirely out of the fish keeping hobby. Especially with the crazed fish owners who attack and berate the new owners about their set up. Most of the Facebook groups I’ve seen have just been cruel and severely judgmental. Nobody helps, everyone just launches into attack mode instead of actually educating.

The common goldfish i got about a year ago from a school project has been through alot, but he is a trooper. He is a healthy 3-4" common goldfish. He has been in a 10g (with healthy parameters) for the past few months but i finally had the chance to get him a 40 gallon breeder! Gonna go with black sand and 4 60g sponge filters . super happy to be setting this up for him

Stocking and tank size for fancy goldies has always been a debatable issue. I’ve got a 260L with a Juwel Bioflow circulating 1000L/Hr housing 8 fancies, some zebra danios and a couple of loaches. Fortnightly water changes and a good clean keep it in check with ammonia and nitrates always where they should be prior to change as a double check. Only thing I’m toying with at the moment is whether I should add an air stone to make sure there’s enough surface aggitation but my filter outlet does plenty.
