Taiwan’s Director of Chinese Affairs Dr Lai Chung has warned Australia could be China’s “next target” if Beijing successfully invades and takes over Taiwan.

“China won’t be able to attack Australia unless they have Taiwan – that’s for sure,” he told Sky News anchor and investigative journalist Peter Stefanovic.

Why did they get rid of Cadet training in high schools many years ago? Not all schools had it but my son's school did and it was abolished. Seems to me we need this urgently - then kids could decide if they wanted to continue in the Forces i.e. trades/officers/clerical etc.

I dare to say that most people don't even know what is the official name of Taiwan and where Taiwan is, they just argue the war blindly based on media propaganda. How ridiculous.

1. What is the full name of Taiwan?
it is the Republic of China.

2. What is the origin of the Taiwan issue?
In 1911, the Xinhai Revolution overthrew the rule of the Qing dynasty, and China began its path towards modernization with set up of Republic of China. Shortly thereafter, the Chinese Civil War broke out between the Chinese Communist Party and the Chinese Nationalist Party, leading to intense political and military struggles.
In 1949, the Chinese Civil War ended with the victory of the Chinese Communist Party under the leadership of Mao Zedong, which established the People's Republic of China. The Chinese Nationalist Party retreated to Taiwan and established a temporary government, continuing to claim itself as the legitimate government of China.
Since then, there has been a political confrontation and division between mainland China and Taiwan, becoming an issue of international concern. Currently, mainland China considers Taiwan as an integral part of China, while Taiwan insists on maintaining its independent political system and advocates for independence.

3. What is the relationship between USA and ROC?
The US government, when the Chinese Civil War began in 1947, believed that the leader of the ROC, Chiang Kai-shek's government, was corrupt and did not make efforts to support it. The US allowed the Chinese Civil War to escalate, and after the ROC Chiang Kai-shek government was defeated and retreated to Taiwan, it became a dictatorship similar to North Korea. The CCP was preparing to attack Taiwan, and the US completely abandoned support for Chiang Kai-shek, using Taiwan as a bargaining chip for the CCP to remain neutral and not lean towards the Soviet Union. However, with the outbreak of the Korean War and China's involvement, the US and China completely broke ties, and the US announced its protection of Taiwan and the ROC. Ironically, at that time, the ROC in Taiwan was a military dictatorship under Chiang Kai-shek, with no connection to democracy.
Until the late 1980s, it was not until Chiang Kai-shek's successor, his son, announced, before his death, that the abandonment of military dictatorship and opened up elections that Taiwan began its so-called democracy. Prior to this, the US had been protecting the ROC in Taiwan, with no association with supporting democracy, just like the US support for the Saudi Arabian government, entirely for US interests.

4. What is the understanding of the Taiwan issue by Mainland China and the CCP?
After the Qing Dynasty occupied mainland China, the remnant forces of the Ming Dynasty withdrew to Taiwan and defeated the Dutch who had occupied Taiwan, using Taiwan as a base to resist the Qing Dynasty. This is similar to the relationship between the PRC and ROC today. Eventually, the Qing Dynasty crossed the Taiwan Strait and defeated the remnants of the Ming Dynasty, officially establishing China's rule over Taiwan. From then on, Taiwan has been regarded as a part of China by China. Therefore, as the legal successor of China, the CCP government of mainland China believes that Taiwan is a part of China, and the prerequisite for establishing diplomatic relations with any foreign country is to recognize that Taiwan is a part of China, including the United States, Australia, and other countries. The CCP government regards the recovery of Taiwan as one of the signs that the CCP is the legitimate inheritor of China's governance. China regards the war to recover Taiwan as a continuation of the Chinese Civil War.

5. The relationship between Japan and Taiwan is as follows:
Japan defeated the Qing dynasty and occupied Taiwan in 1895, and held it until the end of World War II in 1945. At that time, the legitimate government of China, the ROC, took back Taiwan. Four years later, the ROC was defeated by the CCP and retreated to Taiwan. Japan ruled Taiwan for 50 years and promoted Japanese language and culture, deeply colonizing Taiwan. In the 1990s, after Taiwan ended military dictatorship and opened up elections, a large number of Japanese-influenced Taiwanese entered the ROC ruling circle, and their influence was significant. Two out of four Taiwanese presidents since the elections are Japanized Taiwanese, including the current president, who has close ties with Japan. This is also the main reason why Japan believes it has an interest in Taiwan and may participate in a war over Taiwan.

6. What is the relationship between CCP and the United States?
During World War II, the relationship between the United States and the CCP was not bad, and American military advisors had a better impression of the CCP than the Chiang Kai-shek government. Until the outbreak of the Korean War, the United States had hoped to abandon its support for the ROC Chiang Kai-shek government in exchange for CCP neutrality between the United States and the Soviet Union. The Korean War prevented the CCP from reclaiming Taiwan, and the US fleet sailed into the Taiwan Strait to protect the Chiang Kai-shek dictatorship. By the 1970s, during the peak period of the US-Soviet Union rivalry, the CCP's relationship with the Soviet Union broke down and the CCP and the United States came together to confront the Soviet Union. This led to the US acquiescing to the PRC replacing the ROC in the UN Security Council as a permanent member in the 1970s, and the United States also used Taiwan as a bargaining chip in dealing with the CCP. Chinese-American economic cooperation reached its peak in the past 20 years, with US capital utilizing China's cheap labor, US companies making a lot of money, and China's economy taking off. Both sides got what they needed, and the unlucky ones were American workers. Objectively speaking, this cannot be blamed on China. The characteristic of capitalists is to pursue profits, and if there were no China, there would be other low-wage labor countries serving US capital. After Trump took office and oppressed other countries, he demanded that countries including the United States, Europe, Japan, and other allies make major concessions to American interests, and all countries were forced to agree except China. Xi Jinping had already taken office by this time. China was already one of Trump's key targets, but not his only and largest target. Although Trump initially had a good relationship with Xi Jinping when he took office because Trump always liked political strongmen like Putin, due to Xi Jinping's unwillingness to make major concessions and not giving Trump face, China gradually became Trump's only major target, and Chinese-American relations deteriorated until now. Initially, most people in China did not support or dare to challenge US authority, but Xi Jinping's blind self-reliance and insistence on not making concessions placed great pressure on China when the US-China trade war began. However, the outbreak and spread of COVID-19, and Trump's lack of attention to the pandemic, led to his failure to be re-elected and a decline in US national strength. The trade war eased, and China passed the pressure test of US-China relations, and is no longer afraid of the United States. The Ukrainian war gave China a second chance to catch its breath, further consolidating its power, and China has been lucky. China has undergone large-scale militarization mainly in recent years, especially after Trump began to suppress China, which made China feel a sense of crisis.
From the history of China-US relations, it can be seen that the idea that the US supports democratic countries is simply media propaganda. The starting point of US decision-making has always been its own interests. Taiwan has always been a bargaining chip for the United States in dealing with China, and the US doesn't really care whether Taiwan is good or bad. The US is now discussing the Taiwan issue mainly to contain China. China's growing strength has challenged US authority, and the US now wants to use all its power to suppress and defeat China.

7. What is the relationship between China and Australia?
China has always naively regarded Australia as a friend and economic partner, believing that Australia's close economic ties with China would enable it to remain at least neutral in the US-China conflict. However, the MORRISON government has shattered China's dream. China has no territorial claims or conflicts with Australia, but Australia has taken sides and participated in the Taiwan issue in the US-China conflict. If Australia initiates an attack on the Chinese military, it will face missile attacks on its own soil from China. Without thinking, Australia's decision-makers have sided with the United States, making the country's future very bleak. If China and the United States go to war over Taiwan, most Australians are unaware of the severe economic and missile impact that a war would bring. For Australia, the best choice is actually to not participate in the war, but unfortunately this is almost impossible. Australia's media and government have a terrifying one-sided thinking that does not consider Australian interests in decision-making, and Australia's decision-making power has already been controlled by the United States.
If the United States entered the war to compete with China for hegemony and Japan entered the war to maintain its interests in former colonies, then what was Australia's participation for? Was it to demonstrate loyalty to its American master, to provide a reason for supporting democracy that even Americans don't believe, and then to face decades of economic decline alone? That would be too stupid!
