Retiring after 24 years of service as a Command Sergeant Major is not leaving the military. He retired. The only position he could have achieved that was higher than what he held when he retired was Sergeant Major of the Army.

There has never been a former enlisted vice president or president. Someone like Governor Walz is badly needed.
