Can a saved person still sin?

The age old question of whether a saved person can still have sin in their life is a hotly debated topic. Most churches today falsely claim you must turn from sin TO BE saved. This is a subtle, but HUGELY negative falsehood.

So, can a saved person habitually sin? the short answer is yes.

If you are really saved will you stop sinning, and if you can't stop sinning does that indicate that you are not actually saved, but are a false convert? The short answer is no.

The longer answer to that question is more nuanced. In order to fully understand the truth regarding this matter we need to know some basic doctrine.

One is the doctrine of positional sanctification. This means you are Sanctified the moment you believe.

You also need to understand what the doctrine of atonement is. Atonement means that Jesus atoned for, or paid for, all your sins by dying on the cross.

When you believe, the very instant you believe, Jesus' righteousness is imputed upon you (imputation is another essential doctrine), and you become a new creation. You are permanently saved.

Once this happens you benefit from the permanence of Salvation. This vital doctrine means you can never lose your salvation. Anyone who is saved and made righteous, through God's gracious sanctification, is no longer a sinner, but is now an adopted child, instantly made into (by God's grace through Christ) a joint-heir with Jesus. You have permanently passed from death into life.
When you do sin, you bring negative temporal consequences down upon yourself, but your eternal position as a saved child of God is a never-changing, eternally settled, matter.

So will you still sin? Yes.
Should you sin? Absolutely not.
Should you turn from sin? Absolutely yes.
Does turning from sin save you? No.
Does sinning less prove you are saved? No.
Are works required for salvation? No.
Are works important to the kingdom, and the Christian Life? Yes.
Are we encouraged to do good works? Yes.
Must we demonstrate our Salvation through good works? No.
Are we encouraged to demonstrate our salvation by works? Yes.
Then how do we truly demonstrate our belief in Christ? We profess that we believe.
Does professing save us? No. (Trusting/believing in Christ as savior saves us)

So, when Jesus told the woman caught in adultery to "go and sin no more", He wasn't telling how to BE saved. But what to do now that she WAS saved. To honor the one who saved her, through her belief, by faith.

Please read and study the word daily!

At 62 I still have agonizing lack of assurance that I am saved and it is because of sin I struggle with over and over again. It steals any joy I might have. And if I doubt I'm saved, I'm doubting Jesus' finished work! It's circular and I don't have long to live. I BELIEVE! I truly believe. "You'll know them by their fruit." So am I saved by belief (faith) alone in Christ alone for the glory of God alone?
