I live in Canberra and can't say I'm looking forward to stalk-less Teslas. I consider myself pretty open minded and embraced all the unusual things that Teslas have introduced. This is the first one I'm doubtful about.

This looks awful. I love my Model Y but I would not get another Tesla if it didn’t have stalks - I go through a lot of roundabouts

i watched you took your eyes off the road @ roundabouts each time you looked for the button which means tesla has added a level of danger in basic driving....

Get rid of the needless rear screen and the fancy mood lighting and put the stalks back, and while you're at it, put the front and rear sensors on too.

Thanks for showing us what's it like to drive the new stalkless Model 3. I must say, I could live with and get used to the drive selection relatively quickly, but the buttons indicator is a massive fail, along with the deletion of USS.

The indicators on the wheel, maybe you could get use to it but the gear change system seems over complicated & not intuative. Change for change sake. Why didn't the focus on things that don't work well like phantom braking, wipers & twitchy highbeam lol

Never tought that driving round about in your title is a big deal in driving until realising that pressing buttons while moving steering wheel, 3 points turn and parking were actually troublesome .😅 Great that you made video about it.

Think this is one of the dumbest design decisions they have ever made that will actively make me look towards the Seal over the Tesla M3 next year. Madness.

Could you imagine a learner driver getting behind the wheel without indicator stalk?

I can see you need to look at the steering wheel every time. Sure you may after a longer period of use be able to do it more quickly but it's a stupid design decision

I generally love the minimalism of my model 3 but i think this change affects safety unnecessarily. You can only imagine there will be accidents due to new drivers fumbling for the indicators having their attention diverted from the road.

Watching tom drive feels like giving a programmer one of the weird ergonomic keyboard for a day.. exaggerated but you know what i mean haha

Thank you for your video because it confirms why I have trouble driving our new Tesla which was delivered without stalks yet we ordered it with stalks! Even Tesla's online instructional session dated 6th February 2024 presented with stalks (which I saved a screen recorded copy of) only to be confronted at delivery 11 days later with no stalks.

Like you show, the car forces you to take your eyes off the road when trying to play find and seek indicator buttons on multiple occasions, especially in all tight turning situations - try having to turn left and then immediately right at off-set intersections, or do a fast 3-point turn with traffic bearing down on you when your hand has to also reach for the gear buttons on the roof or slide up the screen with shaking hands - impossible! Doesn't allow for any muscle memory when you have to hunt for the buttons or work out their orientation.

After delivery I thought I wasn't hitting the sweet spots on multiple occasions. Then I realised it wasn't me, the buttons randomly seized up. After multiple complaints, Tesla reported its data confirmed the steering wheel indicator buttons were faulty. Why did Tesla wait for me to demand this information when they were already sitting on it and I already asked for it earlier? Next week the steering wheel has to be repaired/replaced at our home some distance from Adelaide. All this within 6 weeks of sheer pain and suffering which won't go away whilst we still have to use a car we didn't order and never expected to be like this.

I warn others not to buy this model.

Seems like its easier to indicate with the buttons in roundabouts if you drive on the left side of the road. Because of where the buttons end up in most cases are on top because you're turning to the right instead of left. So its much easier to reach for and see the buttons

Absolutely ridiculous! Aftermarket stalks will be a must for me.

We are in the market for our second ev. We already have a model 3 but this rules out the m3 for our second one. There is no way in hell I am paying good money for a stalkless car. It is a solution for a problem that doesnt exist. Also Tesla keeps saying they are removing components to make manufacturing easier but had no issues with adding unnecessary cabin lights!
Might look at existing inventory for an older model or try out a Volvo or Polestar this time.
Vote with your money people.

I think it will be a very different situation if the indicators unexpectedly self cancel mid turn. Like when you indicate right and need to move the wheel slightly left first before turning right and it disables the indicator. This can happen to every car as long as the corner is of a certain angle. When you're indicating to exit a roundabout you know it's coming up so you're mentally prepared to press the button. When it suddenly turns off with no warning you probably have no idea where the buttons currently are.

Thanks Tom, I can already imagine those irresponsible drivers ignoring to indicate on most situations when driving this car

What Tesla needs to do is change the indicators in software so that they always match the direction the arrow is pointing. So if you turn the wheel clockwise and past the 12 o’clock position left still indicates left and right indicates right. Surely must be possible via an OTA update…
