Role of Beta Blockers in Anxiety: Propranolol, Atenolol

I'm suffering from anxiety from past 1 years. Use to face problems like shortness of breath and couldn't sleep at night so the doctor prescribed propanol based medication, it helped me during the course but after stopping slowly then again after 2 or 3 months I used to face anxiety again but this time I didn't took any medication, but changed my life style by doing exercises and meditation. At starting it won't show any results like what medicine shows but it'll take sometime and you can see the change.

I have a question, My doctor prescribed me Atenolol 25mg for Generalized anxiety disorder (cardiac anxiety) and the accompanying high BP (160/110) for brief periods and Tachycardia (150+) that panic attack causes. Now I have been taking it for 8 months and my situation has improved, I want to quit this medicine but I am terrified that I may get a heart attack or something serious may happen to me. I feel like I am stuck with this medicine and I am not able to quit, once I tried and got a massive panic attack.

I have been given Inderal LA 20 for use. My doctor checked me and said this was a case of anxiety neurosis. Numbness in various parts of my body (including spots in my back) without any pain, clogged ears and numbness in the face as well. This is accompanied by excessive sweating.

Do you think 40mg is excessive for severe social anxiety?

I’ve been taking 20mg and it works…kinda. I’m still anxious it just brings it down to a more moderate level. I’m not feeling like I’m having a heart attack, but my brain is still racing so it treats a symptom but only one.

I really don’t get the issue with benzodiazepines. I get you don’t want me addicted but I’d 100% rather take the risk of getting addicted to Xanax than love like this.

They also said take it 30 minutes prior, I usually only leave the house 2-3 times a week is that harmful to take 40mg that many times a week?

I took propranolol today, but it gave me too much fatigue.

Since my symptoms are only palpitations related, do you think I should use atenalol to reduce the side effect and don’t have palpitations during public speaking, or you think that propranolol is more powerful and I should just stick with it ?

Does it helps in exam anxiety. I am absolutely fine other days but just during exam I get panic so much
it become impossible for me to perform. My doctor prescribe me zapiz (0.25mg) and Ciprex 10 but these medicine cause so much sleepiness and drowsiness in exam that entire purpose of taking them goes in vain.
