Metoprolol (& Beta Blockers) Side Effects (& Why They Occur)

Metoprolol is a beta blocker used to treat hypertension, anginal chest pain, congestive heart failure and myocardial infarction. It, like other beta blockers, acts to inhibit or “block” the binding of catecholamines (like epinephrine and norepinephrine) to the beta 1 receptor in the heart, reducing heart rate and reducing renin release to ultimately reduce blood pressure. However, due to this mechanism, beta blockers can cause a wide variety of side effects, which we discuss in this lesson.

I slept almost all day and then almost all night. Chest and body felt like a heavy elephant was sitting on top of me. Zero energy. Very heavy, thumpy heartbeats. I had horrible, realistic, constant nightmares. Brain fog. It all stopped when I stopped taking it. And I was only on 10mg! Cardiologist said I had a severe reaction to it, took me off. He listened to me, and I'm lucky. I feel so much better without it. Trust what your body is telling you, folks. ❤

Almost ended up in the ER because of this BP medicine. Raised my BP to 210/95 + & heart rate over 100. The BP meds they have tried on me all caused my BP to go up, not down.

When I first started taking metoprolol, I was taking it in the morning and experiencing lightheadedness, dizziness, etc. I called my doctor and I was instructed to take it in the evening either with or directly after my evening meal. Once I started doing that, I never felt that dizziness again.

When we were trying to get my blood pressure under control, I was taking metoprolol as well as an ace inhibitor and a calcium channel blocker. My blood pressure dropped to 60 over 38... they got me to the ER quickly. I won't take a beta blocker anymore!

I appreciate the straight forward information. I've been taking Metoprolol since 2015 after a heart stint implant and I recently tried not taking it and my heart rate went way up. I will speak to my doctor before trying this again.

This is me again Tina, it also put me in AFib. Since I only take one in the morning and one at night My heart is regulated now, no heart palpitations and no more chest pains. No blood pressure problems either. Sometimes my blood pressure was so low I would almost pass out being on that medicine I couldn't stand too long either

Post craniotomy I couldn’t tolerate metoprolol. For some reason before surgery a doc put me on a different heart medication i can’t recall. 70 here. So when a new doc was treating me she said that metoprolol was a better medication for my blood pressure and prescribed it. I had severe diarrhea ( these types of discomfort always appear in the wee hours of the morning when you desperately want to sleep). I went to my doc and told her to take me off this med. She reluctantly did. She said diarrhea is not one of the common side effects and I was her first patient to have this reaction. To prove she was right, she asked me to try it again to see if I got the same results. I said, no thank you, and walked out. I then am assigned to a cheeky cardiologist. She never heard anyone presenting with diarrhea from metoprolol and wanted me to try 10 mg. Very convincing specialist. I tried and I presented with diarrhea again but not as horrendous as the all nighter experience. Frickin docs think they know it all. I just wished I had used a party hat in the commode and brought her a fresh sample in a 16oz glass jar with lid.

Used 25 mg twice a day. Felt tired, overate carbs, fatigued, gained 20 lbs in two months. Initially lowered bp but also lowered heart rate from 80 to 60-65. Tired all the time, no motivation. Weaned myself off this medication after I realized this drug is a very low tech solution. I don’t want to end up on a pacemaker or worse because of this drug. I studied the heart years ago and the thought of this drug messing with delicate PQRST electrical waves scares the heck out of me!? I am going to have to trust my own body on this one and find natural diet/exercise ways to deal with the hbp. Don’t play with my heart ❤️!!!

Sure.Not.

I was put on it after a type b aortic dissection. I woke up every morning with a 115 heart rate. Normal for me is about 70. I had horrible GI issues and lost 25 pounds in 2 months. I saw a GI doctor, took tests and nothing was found. Doctors kept telling me it was not this med and to keep taking it. I finally had enough and quit taking it. I was better in a week and no longer take any beta blockers.

I have every symptom. I was given metoprolol when I had bradycardia to begin with. Where is the vid about things not to take with the drug? Thanks for this one!

This is very interesting. I have most of these symptoms and feel horrible. Dizzy/lightheaded, palpitations, extreme fatigue, massive headaches, shakes, cold extremities, nausea. They just raised my dosage. I specifically asked if my symptoms could be from the medication and cardi said no. Hmmm

3x in a cardiac unit and it was a PA at urgent care who healed me. I had been saying for over 10 years that the Metoprolol was making my life miserable. Other medications were tried but by stopping the Metoprol my BP got so bad they put me back on Metoprolol. When I saw the PA i was itching all over, wheezing with uncontrolled blood pressure. He told me you can not stop the Metoprolol. You have to very gradually reduce the dose . He suggested Valsartan and worked with my primary and compounding pharmacist to make me Metoprolol drops to be gradually withdrawn over 6 weeks. It is a nasty drug. I am finally stable and free of the symptoms and arrhythmias caused by Metoprol.

I took this drug for many years, but finally asked to discontinue it because of side effects. While on it, my BP was very low, I had the cold extremities, weakness and fatigue and eventually depression. After stopping it, some of the side effects have remained, including the co!d fingers. My BP remains in the normal range and only elevated when I go to a doctor appt.. . I had to record my BP several times a day to prove that it was only white coat syndrome. I am currently on no medications and doing fine.

Ppl are saying all these symptoms but let’s start with health. Are ppl actives like working out? Changing up their diet? Stop smoking? Stop alcohol? Stopping their stress? This medication is purposely designed to temporarily help lower BP and to get ppl better by helping them changing up their lifestyle. But if ppl continue to indulge process food, junk food they are not helping themselves. I’m on this med to lower my BP and going back to a healthier lifestyle of eliminating all these things that causing me health problems and not having to rely on drugs. Try tracking how much calories you’re eating. Try taking your daily supplement support. Sitting at home not being active being obese will not help at all. Burn your carbohydrate, go on intermittent fasting, eat healthier, reduce salt, reduce sugar. Go work out! Because no one here is stating how much they weigh What they eat daily how much they drinking and smoking be smart about your health if you don’t care then don’t complain what this med is doing to you

My husband was on this for several months. He was also on Candesarten 4 mg, blood thinners and a statin for Cholesterol, he had awful side effects to all of them. So he was also taking Hawthorn. So we increased the Hawthorn to 1600 mg a day, introduced Nattokinase 2 capsules a day. He stopped all of the drugs except Candesarten 4 mg. he also takes serrapeptase. He no longer has any of those side effects except a runny nose from the Candesarten. his BP is in the 120/60 and lower. He now exercises on a stationary bike to get some strength back. He was also getting Atrial Fib regularly but hasnt had it now for four years.

Ok, this was a shock to see, lol. My dr has had me on this for a few years because of sinus tachycardia. My heart rate shoots to above 200 bpm for no reason at all.

Thanks for this video. I'm going to pay close attention because I never really understood what this did.

Wow, that answered some things!!! Thank you very much!

Tiredness, itching, dry mouth, hypoglycemia (that was a shocker lol) cold hands and feet, and that stupid heart burn ugh lol

I'm glad to know these are possible side effects now and yet still would rather deal with these things than heart rate skyrocketing for no apparent reason.

Again, thanks. I'm going to check some of your other videos. This one popped into my feed. lol glad it did 😃
