2022 Toyota Aygo X Review

Cheerful, but not cheap

The 2022 Toyota Aygo X is a reworked version of the Japanese firm's long-running supermini, with an off-road look for added toughness.

Let CarGurus help you find your next car:

The Aygo X is a usefully bigger car than the old Aygo, which results in a larger boot and slightly more space for two passengers in the rear seats. It also features an SUV-inspired look, with plastic body cladding and a slightly higher ride height than before.

Power comes from a 1.0-litre, three-cylinder petrol engine that produces 72bhp, so don't expect any fireworks in terms of performance (the 14.9 second 0-62mph time says all you need to know). That said, the Aygo X has some great big car features such as its touchscreen infotainment and driver assistance systems, and is as perky to drive as ever.

In this CarGurus UK review, Rebecca Jackson explores the Aygo X in detail to find out about its practicality, comfort, equipment, driving dynamics and more.

I don’t want to have to spend £30k on an electric city car…..so this is a welcome addition to the sector.

Had mine a week - same spec as this Aygo X Edge, I love it! City car? NAH, I live in rural Lincolnshire, 8 miles to nearest town! Okay, so you have to use your gears to get up a hill occasionally, so what? Mine's doing 62MPG without even trying - it's not a sports car, and nobody would buy it as such, the level of tech is excellent in this car for the price, with cruise control, lane assist, pedestrian and cyclist and collision warning, reversing cam and tons more. It's a yes from me!

Had mine nearly 8 months now. Love it > honestly, one of my best ever car ownership experiences. Opening canvas roof is brilliant. Toyota know what they are doing in many ways, even though they are still slightly behind the curve with BEVs at this point.

An adorable stylish city car, and all that without being super expensive, why not.

We had the 2018 model and drove that one 846miles to Finland, and back again. The car surprised me. It was comfortable and didn't use much fuel even there was a long highway stretch.
The seats are much better than the prius, and I didn't get any problems. I got a little pain signal in my left knee just 50 minutes away from the end of the tour in Norway. Good car for two people.

It's a tough one. Ignis or Aygo X. I love wee cars we need more like these

Just like the Yaris cross despite its downsides I think this is going to be very popular, great wee list of driving assistant tech though 😀

Waiting for a delivery date of my Ginger Beige Edge, it’s taken 9 weeks from start to finish, from being built to being delivered to the dealer.

I tried one today, great car to drive and look at, the lack of power was disappointing though, it seriously needs more power

Good car with a nice ride, driving position etc.
Just don’t ask it to do much more than potter about. Get the roll back roof and you will forget the rest.

Had mine for 2 weeks. It’s the automatic edge version and I’m struggling to get used to it. Your review sums up the pros and cons I have too. It replaced a 2006 Nissan Micra 1.4 litre and I feel that engine size difference sorely, and hear it! Not something I’d noticed on the the test drive unfortunately. I cannot control my speed well at all and surprised to find a bit of rolling back on a hill which I never experienced with the Micra (also an automatic). As for the fancy gadgets, I prefer simplicity ! Would do without the gadgets and have a one touch window back😅

Had one as a courtesy car for a week. 60mpg I’d buy one tomorrow. 1st day hated it by end of week would honestly buy one buy live alone no passengers in rear. Cruises on mway no prob, lovely steering. Totally disagree about the need to thrash the engine. Very torquey. 70 bhp is what a 1600cc cortina used to have

To be fair the Citroen AX GT didn’t have much more horsepower! Although that weighed as much as a bag of crisps!

Amazing what we call tiny today, this car is wider and taller than a 1990s VW Golf! Somehow though the golf had more interior space.

A more balanced review than other channels and you even mentioned the steering wheel adjustment 😊 however I don’t think you mentioned in car storage or glovebox ?
