Read more at Auto Express:

Say goodbye to the Aygo, and hello to the Aygo X. Toyota's entry-level hatch has been beefed up with off-road inspired looks and a new architecture, but can it beat the VW Up! and Hyundai i10? Rising costs and tightening rules on emissions may have forced many manufacturers to abandon their smallest models, but Toyota still believes there’s a future in the city car. Here's Yousuf Ashraf to take you through the design, practicality and interior tech of the new Aygo X.

Well done Toyota for continuing to offer cars like this when so many others are getting out of the A segment because they claim there is no money to be made. I think the styling works. No doubt a well-built, dependable and competent little car in a segment that most of the other big players can no longer be bothered with. How much longer will the VW Up! be around for example?

Woaah :). It is nice to see companies like Toyota still making small models. Thank you for the video :)

It’s a lovely little creature. I wanted a small car because I’m not forking out stupid amounts on petrol and I drive around town for the most part. Only went to look at one on the off chance today, and have ordered it! Equipment spec level is really good on the Edge - it has everything I need and I can’t wait to get it now.

I have always wondered what if these cars offered a rear seat delete option. Yeah the rear seat might be helpful sometimes but the reduced weight and increase cargo space might be beneficial to more people.

They have done a great job disguising the typical city car box shape with the exterior, just hope it doesn't cost more than competitors in a class above like the Yaris Cross does.

Family has been with Toyota since 1978…

Great step forward. Should appeal to younger drivers who will then be more likely to stay with Toyota as they get older. Surely that is what Toyota wants.

Looking good! It's nice to see a non-turbo car for a change.

I think Toyota has done a great job of bringing the concept to a production model, even if some of the original proportions have been forced into cladding, colour and trim.

Woah, was not expecting that interior! especially beside the Yaris and Yaris cross, very... round. and no central vents, a bold move.

Are those 18" wheels? 13s were fine just ten years ago.

Overall, I'd say I like it. But I'd definitely rather a Yaris. The first gen felt so cheap, even compared to small Daihatsu's that shared the engines or were older again. I hope the quality is worth buying new, over a three year old Yaris.

I've never liked a city car, this is the first time. Great design 👍

I enjoy my tin can Aygo and its sporty handling, the Aygo X has a sporty design but I wonder how it handles in comparison.

Think I'll stick to my iQ. Don't need rear seats, three doors mean B posts are further back, giving better sideways visibility, and an uncluttered footwell gives room for my size 12s.

"… the build quality around the cabin is nice as well, ” we are told. Sorry but I have to disagree. Me and my wife test drove an Aygo X this week and I have to be honest and say that I was really disappointed with the interior finish. Cheap and plastic in appearance and feel, despite the gloss colour-co-ordinated trim, which was a nice touch. One of the corner air vents for the windscreen on our demonstrator was poking up and wouldn’t sit flush to the dash. There was a gap between the steering wheel cover and the rest of the trim, I’m sure it was fitted correctly but that gap didn’t look good. Worse was the flimsy parcel shelf which felt like someone had used a thick piece of coat-hanger wire to make the frame and then stretched a pair of black tights over it. Despite these shortcomings my wife was still considering buying an Aygo X; we'd seen good reviews. I suggested we compare it with another car in tha same price range, ‘just to rule out one of Toyota’s competitors, ’ I told her. I’ve never looked at Kia before but the interior finish on the Picanto GT S Line just blew the Aygo out of the water and its little one litre turbo engine was very responsive. In a nutshell, it pays to look at the competition, even if it’s just to rule it out. My wife’s Picanto arrives next March.

Why does the infotainment screen have a car with a hybrid-like battery menu?

The big thing is, it's made by Toyota. So, guaranteed quality and a well screwed together car. It's not a car for me as I'm a petrol head. But a great choice as a town car or someone who fancies the odd trip away with partner. 👍

A 15mm suspension drop and a light pressure turbo conversion would complete it. The SUV stuff is for people who can't think/ have no idea. I'll keep my mk1 Aygo for now.

Looks absolutely great - much better than I thought it would given how amazingly and strongly styled the concept was. 16.5 seconds? Engine performance is beyond a joke. You'd go faster sleepwalking. This is slower than most things on the road - good luck trying to pull out onto a busy road in this thing. I'd rather have less mpg than cause an accident by obstruction on an A road. Shame.
