Toyota Aygo X review: the world’s smallest SUV?!

You may have noticed that in recent years our roads have been overcome by SUVs; in fact, in 2021, SUVs and crossovers made up nearly half of global new car sales. The Toyota Aygo X aims to extend the dwindling appeal of the city car segment with its increased ride height and SUV-inspired styling. However, unlike most small cars, the Aygo retains a fuel-sipping petrol engine – ideal for those who aren’t quite ready to go electric. So, is this the perfect car for this particular moment in time? Or is the tiny Toyota an SUV-sized slip-up? Richard Ingram finds out.

“A lot of people just aren’t ready”?
What you mean is most people’s budgets won’t stretch to electric cars at the best of times, never mind during a cost of living crisis.

Good review but I have to disagree with your comments about the engine. I have an Aygo X with the CVT gearbox and it's brilliant. Yes the 0 to 60 time isn't great but in the town it's very nippy. I do regular longer trips and the car is no noisier than my previous chr and the engine is full of character, bit like a jack russell 😂. All the comments about space are pointless, if you're someone who wants to put a bike in your car you won't be buying an Aygo X. The car is what it is and prospective buyers will look at it in the context of their usage. Oh and the economy is brilliant, mine is currently averaging 66mpg on the current tank of fuel and 56mpg since I've had it.

The engine may be slow but it is bullet proof

I have to say, I love wee cars, everyone talks about full cars all their passengers and suitcases etc, however some people only travel alone (mostly) or with only 1 person, don't have kids and don't want a big car to just nip to the shop. New drivers or older people who are not wanting large SUV's while gaining their drivers stripes or just nipping out a few times a week to local shops or appointments etc. There is a market for really good reliable small cars and sadly I think most brands are starting to forget that no everyone is a full blown family with 2.4 children. Great review 👏

Had my brand new aygo x for 2 weeks now, can't fault it. I'm doing around 50 miles a day, mostly on A roads, averaging 62-68 mpg

I’m not sure comparing it with an electric fiat 500 at twice the price is particularly fair, I think the Aygo is aimed at the price conscious end of the market and as such seems like a nice run around.

1. It will never let you down.

2. Cars like new fiat 500e cost from £23, 000

3. Small electric cars have poor range.

4. Not everyone can charge up at home. Approx half the population of U.K. will never be able to.

5. Public charging is still not that common outside London.

6. Public charging isn’t always reliable. Chargers not working, apps not working.

7. Is there any point in making an SUV out of the Aygo? Too small to be of much advantage, but costs more.

Been driving for more than 40 years but have never had to get out of trouble in a hurry. Must be doing something right.

I have a 2019 Aygo and I had to pic my bf up when he had a flat tyre on his bike, fitted fine in my boot with back seats down. Did take a bit of thought but it's possible. I'm upgrading to the new model and getting it this week. I just prefer small cars. I think your review is a bit too harsh. When I test drove the new Aygo and played about with it I was very impressed.

I'll stick with my Kia Picanto, at least 50 miles to the gallon no matter how I drive it and zero road tax, fantastic little car.

I'll keep my Fiat Panda 4x4. It's been very reliable, efficient, has more boot space, more rear space, bigger windows, which roll down, can actually go off-road with actual 4x4, and in my eyes, is better in every way.

Just ordered one of these yesterday - a bit confused about the statement about "Get out of trouble in a hurry" - when would I need to get out of trouble in a hurry in the UK? I realise I haven't bought an Audi Q7 with 4.3 ltr 8 Automatic gears and an ability to get away from aggressive BMW and Audi drivers. Because I'm thinking more about fuel economy, the fact my last Aygo did 7500 miles in 2 years (so I hardly use it), the kids are now in their 20s and I just need a small car to zip around town.

Doesn't this type of car already exist? I think Suzuki call it an Ignis or something?

Nice car but too small in the back. I prefere the Ignis

I would buy it if the back row wasn’t so cramped and if the back windows actually rolled down, guess I’ll get a yaris instead

A great all round review Richard. If I only had short round town journeys this car would sit on the test drive list unfortunately those are not my journeys with most mileage on the motorways. As an alternative to a town electric car it certainly does make sense though. No range anxiety and you don't have to drive somewhere to charge it and wait. It looks youthful and practical enough and should be cheaper for younger inexperienced drivers to insure. If I had a kid who'd recently passed there driving test it may be ideal as a shared vehicle.

I love how much fun this car looks, but maybe a Yaris would work better for most. Side note, the high spec Picanto and i10 appear to have disappeared from the UK price lists, so they are just as lethargic as this.
